This was a report on GBtennisgirls site copied from tennisforum.

From tennisforum.com:

"Naomi got sick during the 2nd set. I was at US open yesterday and saw her match. With Kucova leading 2/1 in 2nd set, she called for the trainer and recieved treatment for heat exhaustion and what seemed to be just plain old not feeling well. They took her temperature and blood pressure and put bags of ice under both arms and behind the neck. Poor Naomi. She looked out of it and lacked energy."

So it was Naomi that caused the break. Not quite sure how she was so exhausted after a first set which lasted about 25 minutes. But obviously put an end to her hopes once it went to a third

I speak in general terms.

If a player is not able, for whatever reason, to put him/herself in the best physical shape, then there is (rightly) going to be a limit to the patience of the people who are paying for his/her training.

There are no successful tennis players, male or female, who are not in very good physical condition. All top level coaches know that. So there is no point in them wasting their time and money.

Mel took the first set 6-2 and broke at the start of the second, but has just lost 4 games in a row so it is now 6-2 2-4*

Nigel Sears said in June: "She has had some personal problems of late and is based down in Bromley with her coach Rob Smith. As the youngest of the group it's a personal choice, but the other girls make her feel welcome when she practises at the National Tennis Centre."

I deduce from that statement that Naomi chose to move from the NTC to Bromley, and Nigel wanted to make it clear that the LTA are no longer responsible for the course of her career, if it does not work out.

She can help herself. Stop eating oil and sugar, plus go to the gym daily.

Or else see a doctor. It's ridiculous that given how much medicine has progressed, someone can be overweight even if they didn't want to.

No offence to Naomi, obviously. Just think how good she can be if she gets to a proper shape!

Same goes for one or two other British female players. The LTA should give them an ultimatum of around six months after which their funding should be totally cut off. I'm sure that they'll thank the LTA for that in two years of time...

There's no excuse for being overweight, really. I wish that instead of punishing kids for Bebo and similar rubbish, they would apply "tough love" or whatever it's called to some place where it's applicable.

Mel was broken at the start of the third set, but has rallied gaining a rebreak and fighting off at least one break point for 2-1*
