Boys & Girls: British Junior National Championships 18s - 2008.

Main draw begins on the 9th. It's played at the NTC and the surface is hard courts.

It's not possible to directly link to the entry lists. If you want to see them, follow the steps -

1) Go to this link - http://www2.lta.org.uk/Search/FindACompetition/
2) Click on "Junior Nationals" which is under the big blue heading in the middle, "Quick Links".
3) Click on what competition/competition group you want - 18s or 16s, 14s and 12s.
4) Click on 'Entrant List' for the players' names.

A couple of guys I have played in the past are reserves (Tennant and Crawford). Took a set of Crawford years back and should have done the same to Tennant last year (was serving at 5-4 30-30 but choked and lost 7-5, 6-2.

Would be cool to see them in qualies for the Nationals.

Ha, then you can't be too much below this level! smile.gif You should sign up for Futures qualies someday.

They're making Cox play this. I don't know whether to laugh or to cry or to throw my computer away.

It's a great move, na? The only player he has beaten all year long is the unranked Thomaz Bellucci, who was a last minute alternate into Nottingham just because his dad runs the local bakery. Given his current level of play, he should play as many Junior events as possible and if he wins a round or three somewhere, he may get an ATP point sometime in the next two years.

Meh... I hope he'll go out first round (not purposefully, of course - I hate tanks) and use the time to practice/relax.

Most of the 1990er girls are giving it a miss. Not sure why all the 1990 lads are having play. Surely as someone whos already won it Dan Cox should not nhave to play?

Who knows what goes on in the minds of some people at the LTA...

It's just sad. Either they are clueless, or they don't want our players to do well - Neither bodes well for British tennis.

Such nice things we teach our players... One one hand, there's Draper telling things like Serbians go pro at the age of 10 or 12 and on the other, there's a Futures in the country in one week and we make our top players do a super weak Junior tourney. Long live the winning culture!

It's ridiculous! Can't his coach or parents have a pretest or something? Surely if there is a more suitable tournament, he should be allowed to play in that?

I guess that if anyone protests, they'll have their funding cut off.

But maybe with the good show in Ilkley, they'll see an error in their ways and let him do Cumberland or Challenger qualies somewhere. I doubt it, but let's see...

I thought the purpose of providing funding is to help players develop their tennis, by playing suitable level tournaments are in the right achieving this; why use funding cut as a way of enforcement? Bizzare!!!

Boys 18s qualies draw

Watch out for Chris Nott, Alastair BArnes, Ahmed El Menshawy and Joshua McTaggart who all played futures qualies in Wrexham as a warm up.

Does anybody know how the seeds have been worked out for the main draws?

Not for definite but my assumption is that it goes by ATP/WTA ranking, followed by ITF ranking followed by LTA rating.

Ah ok, how come they use ATP and WTA rankings for a junior event? Surely it would make sense just to use junior rankings so ITF and British ranking.

Well, that would go against people who don't play Juniors.

Anyway, I don't agree with this seeding procedure, either. Ideally, they should have seedings based on judgement and not rankings, like they do at many Grade 5 events and in 12 or 14 and under tennis. But that would require someone who has an idea about tennis, and I doubt you would have anyone fitting that criteria in the Junior departments of the LTA.

Heather Watson will probably beat all the seeds ranked ahead of her barring maybe Tara. And she is definitely far better than Windley at this moment.

The boys' field is horribly weak because even Alex Ward won't be playing now.
