Yes, I'm sure he did. He said that he would he happy if he got a main draw wild card sometime back, or else would do qualies if need be.

Ahh... well. He'll now take some rest after New Haven (if he gets to play) and get ready for some clay tennis. He'll play the Brasov Challenger, Bucharest qualies and then DC in Romania.

Dent not being there is confused.gif He would be quite a crowd puller, too.

If he beats Kunitsyn tonight (which I think he could well do, although 7-5 in the 3rd against Kendrick with an injured knee isn't a great win), he'll get a SE into New Haven, which he could have chosen over the qualies WC I suppose.

Davis Cup in Romania will be a very difficult match for India as I don't imagine they'll win many matches on the clay... they'll probably need Somdev to win both his matches and then get Bhupathi/Paes together to win the doubles to make the world group (and if they do, they need a home draw, as they'll have a chance of winning against some teams on the grass)

Bjorkman is out of qualies, so Heuberger is in.

Alts list looks like -

1. Felder, Marcel URU 293
2. Klein, Brydan AUS 295
3. Gard, Catalin ROU 296
4. Sorensen, Louk IRL 297
5. Alcaide, Guillermo ESP 298
6. Todero, Nicolas ARG 299
7. Francis, Alberto USA 302
................................................
8. Coelho, Andrew AUS 303
9. Marray, Jonathan GBR @303
10. Baker, Jamie GBR 304

Good luck to Francis and Przysiezny in New Haven. smile.gif Hopefully one of them will qualify and win a round.

Main draws at Geneva and Manerbio are out, containing Sorensen and Alcaide respectively. So I guess they can't be here?

They have a chance of getting in, you know. Jamie is definitely going to sign in and may get in as an alternate, if not from before.

Is Jonny there or in Britain, Blade?

I can't believe the cut's gone so low this year - but it'll be great news if it goes even lower and Jonny and/or Jamie get in. I guess it depends not only on how many withdraw but also how many of the players on the list above could get to New York in time if they had to. Jamie must be able to.

I know qualifying starts on Tuesday - but when does the draw come out?

I'd guess Monday, it usually comes out the day before qualifying starts.

Am I right in saying that the US have traded wild cards with both the French and the Auusies? If this is right, then why are we not doing likewise when we didn't come close to awarding them all to Brits?

It's to do with the fact that the lta don't run Wimbledon. Therefore, we can't trade with the other grand slams, all of which are run by their country's governing body.

Why we can't sort that issue out with a touch of communication, and negotiation i have no idea!!

We did trade WC's at one stage with the Australians, as I'm sure Baltacha got a WC for the Aussie Open, with an Aussie getting one at Wimbledon, but then they stopped for no real reason it seemed.

That was in 2003, when a one year deal saw Elena Baltacha gain a WC for the main draw and Anne Keothavong a WC for qualifying. I am sure that the AELTC would be amenable to future trading arrangements with other slams providing there is clear benefit to young players of considerable potential. In 2003 Elena and Anne were seen as potentially fast-track for the top 100 so the deal was set up. However their progress stalled, and there was no-one else to justify the continuation of the scheme. If some of our juniors make rapid progress (boys or girls) the subject will be raised again I'm sure.

It needs to be 'a lot of money' - just try booking scheduled flights, interconnecting flights and hotels in NY plus taxis and food. Can't compare it with cheap package holidays! They also have to pay for their coaching (apart from Boggo of course), gym and court time. Remember these players don't have other income and often go several weeks without playing in between events and during training, ie. not earning anything.

I dont think Jonny ever entered and he is having a week off before a two week training spurt over August and re-starting in US Challengers (probably) September 8th.

Oh, okay. Good for Jamie Baker!

No updates yesterday or today, although I don't doubt that there has been a change or two.
