RE: Week 34 - US Open Qualifying - 2008.

Bloomers and Slabba are both in. smile.gif

Some of the withdrawals tell us who have the wild cards -

Delic
Evans
Jenkins
Levine
Warburg
Ball

It's weird that Tennis Australia chose Ball ahead of Klein since Klein is a far better prospect! Brydan gets very little help with wild cards for so high profile a player - the only big event wild card he has ever received is the one at AO this year.

Austin Krajicek has one wild card and the last one belongs to the French federation.

We know only the next seven names on the alts list, so it's not possible to know exactly how far away Jamie and Jonny are.

But barring additional PRs, the alts list will look like this -

1. Skugor, Franko CRO 292
2. Heuberger, Ivo SUI @292
3. Felder, Marcel URU 293
4. Klein, Brydan AUS 295
5. Gard, Catalin ROU 296
6. Sorensen, Louk IRL 297
7. Alcaide, Guillermo ESP 298
...................................................
8. Todero, Nicolas ARG 299
9. Di Mauro, Alessio ITA 300
10. Masson, Jeroen BEL 301
11. Francis, Alberto USA 302
12. Coelho, Andrew AUS 303
13. Marray, Jonathan GBR @303
14. Baker, Jamie GBR 304

Great that Slabba and Bloomers make the cut, meaning at least 4 Brits in qualifying, and I don't think I'm surprised by any of the WC's really, as even though Klein's a better prospect than Ball, Ball is higher ranked, so probably went with that as part of the decision.

Marray and Baker won't make it though, even though I think they'll be slightly higher up the alternate list than that as I doubt someone like Di Mauro would have bothered entering for this. (and hope Klein does get in as well)

True, and even five minutes ago I thought Ball to be two years older than he  actually is. ashamed.gif

Laurent Recouderc got the French wild card. omfg.gif Was it by a play off or just nomination? If it was by a play off, it's okay, but it was a weird decision if it was by choice, as Recouderc almost never plays off clay.

So far the qualies wild cards that we know are -

Ricardas Berankis LTU
Ryan Thacher USA

Good call with Di Mauro, FD. smile.gif

We know the alts list a bit better now. The names after the dotted line are assumed by including everyone and excluding the possibility of PRs.

1.
Heuberger, Ivo SUI @292
2. Felder, Marcel URU 293
3. Klein, Brydan AUS 295
4. Gard, Catalin ROU 296
5. Sorensen, Louk IRL 297
6. Alcaide, Guillermo ESP 298
7. Todero, Nicolas ARG 299
8. Francis, Alberto USA 302
................................................
9. Coelho, Andrew AUS 303
10. Marray, Jonathan GBR @303
11. Baker, Jamie GBR 304

Are you allowed to withdraw from a Challenger and play here?

Alcaide is in the main draw of Manerbio.
Sorensen is in the main draw of Geneva.

The others ahead of our boys are -

Ivo Heuberger - It was quite a shock to see his name. He's fit again as he has been playing in Bundesliga (I think) recently.

Marcelo Felder - No clue... but may play as he has been playing on hard recently.

Brydan Klein - Will almost surely play if he is in.

Catalin Gard - Has been playing on clay recently, so doesn't believe that he can qualify. The money factor is surely there and he went to AO qualies.

Nicholas Todero - Probably will as he went to Wimbly qualies (and did surprisingly well there).

Alberto Francis - Obviously will unless he has plans outside tennis.

Andrew Coelho - Same as Klein.

Baghdatis and Ljubo will withdraw according to newspaper reports, so the first two alts (Oscar Hernandez and Karanusic) should get in. Hernandez didn't enter qualies, but Karanusic's withdrawal will let the first qualies alternate enter.

What idiots... they didn't even give Somdev a qualies wild card. hmm.gif

Aubone, Jean Yves USA
Berankis, Ricardas LTU
Buchanan, Chase USA
Clayton, Alex USA
Harrison, Ryan USA
Helgeson, Travis USA
Koniecko, Bryan USA
McClune, Michael USA
Smyczek, Tim USA

I guess Harrison replaced Thacher because he's injured or something?

I presume Somdev asked for a WC though?

If he did, I'd have expected him to get one, so it's a bit of a surprise that he didn't, and no WC for Taylor Dent either which is a surprise

Yes, I'm sure he did. He said that he would he happy if he got a main draw wild card sometime back, or else would do qualies if need be.

Ahh... well. He'll now take some rest after New Haven (if he gets to play) and get ready for some clay tennis. He'll play the Brasov Challenger, Bucharest qualies and then DC in Romania.

Dent not being there is confused.gif He would be quite a crowd puller, too.
