So how many Brits have played Challengers in Africa? Goodall played in Morocco this year. I remember Amadeus doing East London qualies, too. Who else?
There can't be many because these days there's not much ATP tennis played outside North Africa, and the tourneys in Morocco, Tunisia etc. are all on clay.
I'm sure Delgado, Auckland and Hutchins have all played doubles events in Africa at some point as there's a couple of 100K challengers, where they may have played.
Rusedski played in Bermuda in 2004 during his comeback from one of his many injuries, but lost in the first round.
Yes, you're right, though I think that was after the 'drugs' ban. I've got no idea why he played a Challenger on clay. He went out in R1, not surprisingly, embarrassingly beaten by Bjorn Phau!

Don't think that Jonny can complain about that draw at all and he should win his opener there really... nice chance to get a few points to his name, and Quereshi in the second round is having a poor season, so that's a winnable match as well
A.U.H.Qureshi's no. 1 fan Imran (who pops up on Rusedski.co.uk and MTF quite a bit, usually to ask if Mr Q is going to get a WC for Wimby, Toronto, the Olympics or wherever), is getting very excited about the prospect of Mr Q potentially meeting Jonny in R2.
A bit of stirring produced ...
"MARRAY NO CHANCE FOR QURESHI!!"
Quite!

Just for the record, he will play Qureshi (5) in R2, the latter having seen off the Colombian qualifier, Galán, 3 & 2. In the other half of the draw, the second seed, Robert Smeets, is out, beaten 2 & 2 by his compatriot (& doubles partner (2)), Adam Feeney!
Talking of the doubles, Jonny & his Aussie partner, Andrew Rabbit, sorry, Coelho, won their doubles encounter with the local pair, Dias & Pereira, 7-6(3) 7-6(6), & will play either the top seeds, Qureshi & Santiago González (MEX), or Julio César ( ) Campozano & Carlos Salamanca (ECU/PER), in the QFs.
Two nice wins for Jonny, as he's done his first job which was to win his opening match here.
Quereshi has had a terrible season though, as on hard courts he's very beatable as his serve isn't effective and his baseline game is very poor (I think Jonny's is better than his)
great result for Jonny, great to see him competeting at the challanger level do we think he can get back into 250 range n then push again?
If he stays fit then I dont see any reason why he cant get back to #250 or so, he isnt a worse player than he was then and so there's no reason why he cant make it back to that level. Whether he can be better in future than he was in the past is always a difficult question, few players do much better after 24 or so than they did before it, but serve volleyers do tend to go on longer and peak later so maybe he can.
I do also think he understands himself better now and which sort of events he does well in, and so I hope to see more of him playing at better quality events and less futures type events now which could also help.
