This tournament is played only about 50 miles away from Wardy's old academy, which explains why he is here and not in a Challenger.

I hope he gets the title and Alex Ward wins a round or two.

R1: (1) James Ward WR 457 v Andoni Vivanco-Guzman (ESP) WR 1011
R1: Alex Ward WR 991 v Gerard Granollers-Pujol (ESP) WR 976

Interesting doubles draw, James & Granollers-Pujol are the 4th seeds and they play Alex & Matthias Dorfler.

An okay draw for Alex. Not the best he could have got, but he didn't draw a seed, and GGP (younger brother of Marcel) is most beatable.

Komlavi Loglo is warming up for the Olympics with a wild card here. smile.gif

Ward should win his opener here, and has a nice road to the QF's, where we will find out how seriously he is taking the event, and whether he can win a weak Spanish futures on the clay, as to have not won a futures title yet if something he needs to rectify.

Don't hold out much hope for Ward-the-younger here though based on his current form, although he could win it if he finds the form that took him to his final.

Would just love it is Loglo drew Avalavo (th El Savadorian guy) in the first round of the Olympic games.... would be a classic encounter!!! (although if either of them get Muzza to begin with I won't complain)

Arevalo. Sheddie reckons he looks like Nadal! Or were you talking about someone else, David?

Anyway, it would be hilarious if they drew each other. rofl.gif One of them would get a full 25 points, which is more than what you get at a Challenger semi!

There's some very strong players competing here and of course ranking means nothing in Spain (as Alex W showed earlier in the year) as all the players are pretty solid, so defo not a walk in the park for Wardy this week!

Oh. cry.gif Still, that was a good fight against a talented young player, so I guess he's coming back.

Thanks for the score, by the way.

James won by 6-2 6-7(5) 6-3.

He's playing on red clay for the first time since March, so we will excuse him for losing that set.

Second round opponent hasn't been decided, but the other seed in his quarter is out.

It's another win for James, and I suppose dropping a set to a pure clay court player isn't too worrying as it's the first time he's been back on the clay for a long time.

It's another point at the very least, and with the seed gone, a chance to reach a semi final here, although I'm not too bothered about how he does here given I suspect he's only playing here as it's near his academy.

As is the fourth seed (opposite half of the draw), our old friend from Togo, Komlavi Loglo, who was beaten 6-7(4) 4-6 by Gutierrez Ferrol!

He'll have a few battles like that i suspect but i can certainly see him making the Final here, if not winning the tourny!

The last month or so playing much higher ranked opposition should certainly stand him in good stead when he drops back down to these future events

From tomorrow's OoP his next opponent is Stephan Fransen (NED) who knocked out the much higher ranked player from Spain, Boje-Ordonez. He's also due to play his quarter-final doubles match with his delightfully named partner Gerard weirdfaceGranollers-Pujol.
