Week 30 - WTA Tier II - Los Angeles, California

Both Anne and Mel playing here with Anne being a DA and Mel playing in qualifying. The qualifying draw should be out in the early hours of tomorrow morning and the MD in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Hopefully Mel can continue where she left off at wimbledon and get closer to the top 100 and Anne can continue from where she left off this week in stanford and get a bit closer to the top 50 not to mention breaking the top 75 as she will be 76 next week. Its a much stronger field this weeks so although it will probably be a tough match whoever she plays in the first round, Im sure she will be able to tough it out. She has to have taken a hell of a lot of confidence from her match yesterday and now she hopefully believes that on her day she can beat almost anyone.

Good luck girls!

Mel has a good draw (just 2 rounds to qualify as it is a 56 player main draw):

(6)SOUTH, Melanie GBR vs (WC)ZHELTOVA, Katsarina BLR
PODKOLZINA, Alexandra USA vs (10)HRDINOVA, Eva CZE

Oh, I didn't realise it was a 56 MD. Glad Mel was given a good draw. Good luck!

The first match on Mel's court features Olga Puchkova who managed 26 double faults against Georgie last week. Well she appears to be going for the WTA record this week - so far 23 doubles in 8 service games, and they have just split sets, so there's a set left for her to go for it!

Olga ended with 29dfs, 2 short of the record. Hope she can sort her problem out, so that she becomes known for her tennis rather than notoriety.

It means that Mel will probably be on around 10pm

Wins the tiebreak 7-4
There is nothing about Zheltova's ITF record to suggest why she is posing Mel so many problems

It's weird that she's struggling! hmm.gif Maybe Zheltova is a local college player with loads of people cheering?

Not that this is played in a college. This is actually played in the Home Depot Center, the grounds which host the mightly LA Galaxy. worship.gif

At least she won the first set, but it involved the typical WTA match where there were 6 breaks of serve!

Does seem surprising that she's struggling, but as it's her first match since Wimbledon, she's probably just getting back into her stride of playing matches again... or she's just having a bad day on court and is having to struggle through.

There is a Katrina Zheltova from Belarus playing for Sacramento State Uni, California and she is a very good player for college standard. I believe it's the same Katsarina that Mel is playing and that could explain why she's struggling.
