Chances are that press speculations are above the true mark, but paying £25 a year for a publicist would be a waste of money.
What the hell is "keep good news stories about British tennis in the newspapers" even supposed to be about? Why exactly would the papers want to write good things about the LTA?
I'd like to revisit this subject, and though not entirely relevant as the courts are not in public park, I feel I must name and shame Corby Indoor Tennis Centre.
Through the summer, myself and my brother have been using school cards which he obtained due to going to college (naughty naughty I know lol, I'm not in college) to play tennis at the aforementioned Tennis Centre. It meant we could pay £2.50 each, making it £5 for the court for an hour. Not the cheapest court I've ever used, the ones over the road are about £4 and in fairly good condition but we walked to the Indoor Centre on the odd occassion it was raining.
Now, the school cards expired at the weekend, and we fancied a game tonight, but for some bizarre reason the school over the road had taken down the nets from the tennis court. They do it every now and then. So we decided to phone up and book a court at the Indoor Centre. I warned my brother that we would not get it for £5 now as the summer school cards had expired and it would more likely be around the extortionate price of £8-£10.
The phone call went something like this
Me: I'd like to book a tennis court tonight please, could you tell me how much that would be
Guy at tennis centre: Seventeen pounds
M: No, I'd just like a tennis court to play tennis on
G: Yes, that's seventeen pounds
M: Seven pounds?
G: Seventeen
M: No, I only want the one hour. Just for a game of tennis. Just a simple tennis court
G: Yes, that will be seventeen pounds
M: Do I get ball boys and umpires included in the price?
G: No
M: Is there Hawkeye on the court?
G: No
M: Are you sure that's right?
G: Yes, it's seventeen pounds
M: Wow, I think I'll leave it and rather than play tennis once a week I'll change my holiday destination from Hunstanton to the Seychelles next summer
G: Yes, I think that's a good idea.
M: Thanks for your help, goodbye
SEVENTEEN POUNDS! FOR AN HOUR'S TENNIS!
WOWWW
And they wonder why people don't play tennis as a recreational sport. That's completely extortionate. I paid less money a couple of weeks ago to get into Alton Towers for the day!
