Shame about Wardy losing, though. That was so close...
Slabba's ranking will now be around 310ish.
If he wins his QF, he'll be ranked 290ish. If he wins his SF, he'll be ranked 267ish. If he wins his final, he'll be ranked 240ish.
I think he'll be safe for USO qualies with a ranking like 270 (that'll probably go down by a bit, maybe even to 290). Another win here would be brilliant!
I certainly didn't expect the results to be that way round - disappointing for Wardy (though it turns out that both tiebreaks were very close and his R1 win was excellent) but great win by Slabba!
L16: (Q) James Ward WR 474 lost to Miles Armstrong (AUS) WR 342 by 7-6(6) 7-6(5) L16: Alex Slabinsky WR 332 beat (2) Robert Smeets (AUS) WR 153 by 3-6 6-3 7-6(4)
QF: Alex Slabinsky WR 332 v Ivo Klec (SVK) WR 345 (CH=184 in 2006)
Klec beat Bloomers 3 & 2 in Dublin last week having lost to him 1 & 2 in Wolfsburg last year but lost to Josh 4 & 6 in Wimby Q and lost to Wardy 10-8 in the final set tiebreak in Queen's qualifying. He also lost a very close match to Boggo in Wolfsburg last year 6-7(4) 7-6(6) 7-6(2) but none of this gives a consistent idea of how tough (or not) Slabba is likely to find it tomorrow!
Edit: I'm not sure how I managed to type 5 for 3 twice earlier ...

Tough loss for Ward, but he probably did what he expected to do this week and more, so losing a close match to someone ranked 100 places above him is not a bad week for him, even though this was a match that he probably could and maybe should have won.
Stunning win for Slabba though, and he finally backs up a first round win and makes a quarter final, and even though I don't rate Smeets at all, it's still a great win for him and I think this QF was coming.
Klec in the QF is a great chance for him to make a SF (and get on Israeli TV!!!) as he's an excellent draw at this stage of the competition, and with his recent losses to British players we know he's beatable (he must be sick of playing Brits though), and this is the kind of chance he has to take.
EDIT: Steven, you may want to check those set scores for Slabba/Smeets... didn't know the 6-5 set was back
Well done Al, and a very winnable quarter too! This could be a very big week for him
