RE: Week 27 - Futures F10 (10k) - Bals, Romania

Well done to Matt for the win, and hope he can finish the job Oscar started and take out Bella - good to see him beating a top player as well as he always seems to have lacked the belief that he could beat them when I've seen him play.

Feaver though needs to get out of Romania as things aren't happening for him at all, but he's staying for a few more weeks it looks like.

Matt has made good progress in recent months, I believe since Bates has been at Sutton, but would be very suprised if he ever made top 500, cant comment on Thornley havent seen him. But dont think his results suggest he is going to be big news either, though maybe he could max out around #400 ish

Impressive revenge for Podlewski's defeat:

L16: Matt Illingworth WR 955 beat Marco Bella (ITA) WR 919 by 1 & 1 biggrin

QF: Matt Illingworth WR 955 v Costin Paval (ROU) WR 952

Paval is a 17-year-old who has not played  a Brit at senior level before but at junior level, he lost 5 & 5 to Josh Milton in Aug 2006 and beat James Richardson in three sets last year.

This is turning into a fab week for Matthew, who has made it third time lucky in Futures QFs by reaching what I think will be his first semi-final! smile

QF: Matt Illingworth WR 955 beat Costin Paval (ROU) WR 952 by 7-6(3) 6-4 biggrin

SF: Matt Illingworth WR 955 v (6) Andrei Mlendea (ROU) WR 503

In the last year, Mlendea has played two Brits, losing to Wardy in 3 sets and Eaton in 2.

Matt's now certain to get an SE for next week, even if he hasn't scraped in as a DA.

Great week for Matt, and delighted that he's reached a semi final, especially as it's in Romania where we've never been able to get any points.

Mlendea won't be the easiest semi final opponent, but he beat Leonte earlier so there's no reason why he can't beat him.

Not unexpected. Excellent week though. smile

Good going Matt, taking advantage of a good draw. This should move him up around 100 places to the 850s I think. Good constant steady progress from Matt. Anyone seen him play could tell us what they thought of his game please? Any chance he could move towards the top 500 at some point?

Matt's super-consistent and extremely fast around the court, I think the slower the courts the better for him, most at home on the clay.....got a great single-handed backhand, particularly on the passing shots

doesn't have any huge weapons in his game, but a good returner.....he's quite a short guy, about 5'7-5'8ish....wins matches by frustrating opponents into errors and through his shot-making on the run

On the slower courts he's giving players ranked 300-400 quite a few problems so could maybe max-out into top 400 maybe.....

Great run for him this week to reach the semi finals, and a shame that he lost his match, but it's been his best week yet, and hopefully gives him some confidence to go on and repeat the success.

Think he may need the confidence boost as even at Surbiton, when he was winning against some ranked 300-400 places above, he didn't seem to believe that he could beat them even though he was the better player at the time, and then just fell away in the second set.

He's got a decent game for the slower courts... probably hits with too much topspin to be a major threat on the faster courts, but I think he has a chance of making the top 500.
