Week 26 - The Championships, Wimbledon: R2 Men's Singles Matches

So we have two into R2 :

Chris Eaton GBR v D Tursonov RUS

Andy Murray GBR v X Malisse BEL

Can we use this thread to talk up Chris and Andy and then maybe seperate threads for both matches...what do folks think ?

Both matches up on Thursday.

I really really think we can have two men in R3.

i dont know about chris beating tursonov. I think no matter how hit or miss he is he will just have two much. But then if Chris serves like he did today he would even have beat federer. LOL

I think it's academic, Drew, as Andy's match will be covered in a R2 thread in the AM forum! wink  This is the obvious place for people to comment on Chris' encounter with Tursunov!  Much as I'd love to see him go a round further, I doubt it will happen! cry

If Chris can serve another 25-30 aces then DT is there for the taking. DT served 27 aces today himself so no slouch...

It took 5 sets and hours of play to beat Mahut today....as ever Im optimistic !

I am afraid that even if Tursunov is on one of his less interested or distracted days, I feel he will just prove simply quite a bit too good for Chris.

I would love to be proved wrong though.  Go, Chris !

You & I both, indy - & as I remarked on the R1 thread, "he may not stand so much as a dog's chance against Tursunov tomorrow, but he has absolutely nothing to lose, so I imagine he'll just go for it much as Naomi Cavaday did in the first set against Venus yesterday!  And stranger things have happened already this Wimbledon... biggrin ", not least the defeat today of the seemingly (semi-)invincible Djoko by "Mad" Marat...! biggrin

*  Apparently the match will be third on N° 1 Court!

will be interesting to see how chris reacts to being on a show court, and now that he is the saviour/hero of British Tennis.
he appears to have played with out any pressure vs Pash, and maybe can go in with the same feeling against DT.
but we all know what DT's fav past time is; thats writing about bashing brits in his blogs and making the fans cry.
if chris starts badly i hope he doesnt tighten up and crumble.
will also be interesting to see hwo the media react should he lose, perhaps it wil ldpeend on the style.

Yes, I hope the press isn't too negative when he loses. Hopefully Andy can do well and take the heat off Eaton - it's also important that Chris is carefully managed over the next few months, otherwise he could be on a horrible emotional rollercoaster. The stakes have suddenly gone up in terms of his career (and the sparsity of good Brits is the main factor) and I wouldn't want to see him bust in the next few months.  This sort of situation should be a good test of the LTA.  It's the only national association that would be able to concern itself in the affairs of the World no.660 and this should be a good indication of whether it can use its resources effectively.

I read somewhere (don't ask me where, it was very late at night and I was looking at all the Wimby press coverage I could find on the net!) that Draper has said that Brad Gilbert will be helping Chris, among other duties, until his contract is up. I have reservations about the usefulness of that, but we will see.

Edit - lol, I have just seen where I read it - here on this board!

well there was the article from the press assoctioan, which i put in draper backing boggo thread where he was questioned on it, but his answer was a bit evasive.

brad maywell be alble to inspire Chris a bit, but it is quite amsuing what exaclty the press expect him (BG) to be able to do ina quite short space of time

Dear Jim
Please fix it for me to have Brad Gilbert coach me for 1hr, then i will surely be able to beat 13 yr old indians at my tennis club.

Regards

Jac

There's a guy called Eaton playing at the moment. On serve so far at 3-4.

Eaton's been improving as the set's gone on. Has been holding serve with increasing ease and has pushed Tursonov to deuce in the last two receiving games. I can't see this lasting though... *5-6.
