Whose outstanding Wimbledon record is this?

Between 1976-1986 which famous GB player had this truly awful record?:

1976 - Lost R1 to Phil Dent - 4-6, 5-7, 6-3, 9-8, 7-5
1977 - Lost R2 to Karl Meiler - 2-6, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, 9-7
1978 - Lost R1
1979 - Lost R1
1980 - Lost R1
1981 - Lost R2
1982 - Lost R1 to Russell Simpson - 3-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, 6-2
1983 - Lost R1 to Craig Miller - 6-1, 6-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1
1984 - Lost R3
1985 - Lost R3
1986 - Lost R1 to Cristo Steyn - 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-1

So thats FOUR losses from 2 sets to love up!

Too early for Bates, no?

No idea about the answer but that is some record! I'll take a blind guess (based purely on the time period given) and go for John Lloyd.

Yes our illustrious DC Captain was probably the biggest choker we ever had at Wimby - although not in the Mixed Doubles!!

I was interested to see his record as well so here it is:

1986 - WC (Age 22)
128WBroderick DYKE (AUS) 7-6 7-6 6-3
64LMats WILANDER (SWE) 6-4 6-7 7-6 4-6 0-6

1987 - DA
128WAndrei OLHOVSKIY (URS) 7-6 6-2 4-6 7-5
64LRichey RENEBERG (USA) 4-6 6-4 3-6 4-6

1988 - DA
128L Glenn MICHIBATA (CAN) 4-6 5-7 4-6

1989 - WC
128L Kevin CURREN (USA) 2-6 6-4 6-7 3-6

1990 - WC
128L Sergio BRUGUERA (ESP) 7-6 4-6 3-6 1-6

1991 - WC
128L Goran IVANISEVIC (CRO) 6-7 6-7 2-6

Nothing to shout about (although he did get a couple of wins I guess)

Took Ivansevic to two tiebreaks on grass - fair play.

Lost to Brugera on grass in 1990 when the courts were still like sheet ice - say no more wink.gif

it always cracks me up when Lloyd talks about our players being underachievers or lazy because in that respect he's such a hypocrite.

In his era he was regarded as a very talented player who never achieved his potential because he was lazy and simply didn't work hard enough, enjoyed the off court lifestyle too much and wasn't prepared to put in the hard graft particularly fitness wise

Listening to John Lloyd's commentary so far this week, and over the last year or so I've been getting gradually more impressed. During Eaton's match he defended quite a few of our players in this manner, talking about how hard they work and how they are maximising their potential and you can't ask for more than that. Since becoming DC captain Lloyd really seems to have taken more interest in the lower ranked players and lower level tournaments and he's taking his job seriously. How many times have reports about challengers/futures this year included "watched by John Lloyd". So I'm going to stick my neck out for him. He's not perfect, but I think he's much better than he was before being DC captain.

Anyone wanting to blast Andrew Castle, let me know. That one I won't defend, in fact I'll happily join you. biggrin.gifwink.gif
