What has British women's tennis done to upset the Wimbledon draw gods? Fifteen matches in the last 3 years should have produced 5 against seeds on average, yet somehow we've ended up with 9! For Naomi and Mel it is 3 draws each, all against seeds. At least the draws against non-seeds are as usual at the winnable end of the spectrum.
Which Anne will turn up - the one who coasts through Challengers or the one who looks so nervous on the bigger stage (12 consecutive defeats in Tour/Grand Slam grass tournaments since her last win against Nicole Pratt)? If it's the former then she has a great chance, but....
If you have to play a seed then Shahar Peer is pretty high up the list, but Katie will still have to play right at the top of her game to gain her first win over a top 50 opponent.
Mel will curse her luck as Alona Bondarenko has run into form on grass backing up her Birmingham QF with a semi in Rosmalen.
Bally will have bad memories of low ranking Germans at Wimbledon (she was riddled with nerves against Sabine Klaschka on Centre Court). I just hope that the OOP committee refrain from their normal attempt to screw up Anne or Bally by putting them on court TBA - ie Centre or number 1 as last match if possible.
Naomi is really building up her CV of matches against grand slam champions. As Indiana says it is the best time to play her if you have to. I fear though that however well Naomi plays the extra attention will lead to unflattering comment in some sections of the media about the lack of fitness of British women.
Naomi has been working hugely on her fitness since the Hingis match, I think that in the last 6 months of 2007 she lost at least 1 stone so the movement definately will be a lot better than last year.....
Yep, I think that's closer to the truth than the defensive replies, and "just naturally not good movers" crap that I have had when raising such matters before
The fact that the stone could be lost almost says it all, and is a sad enditement, which would not have been tolerated under a more professional regime.
It's also rather a matter of personal responsibility as well to make the best of what talent you have.
Naomi put a lot of work in on fitness/conditioning last year, and looked good at the start of the year but less so now - perhaps her injury has been a factor. There's an article on the BBC website (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/7452588.stm) where Nigel Sears assesses the 5 Brits and says about Naomi (surprisingly in a public forum) "She has had some personal problems of late..." - I don't know if these 'problems' relate to the fitness/conditioning issue.
Cavaday is not fit enough to reach her full potential simple as that!!! She is in fact heavier than last year & must really work hard to loose that kebab gut.....harsh but true!!! Has the game for the top 50 WTA just needs to be fit enough to show it!!

Naomi has potential for top 100 I hope she causes an upset I cannot stand the Williams sister they are bad losers and very unsporting. I know loads of people will disagree but I am fed up of their father masquerading round Wimbledon like royalty.
I don't disagree scottie, I can't stand the Williams sisters. Would give my reasons but I have to nip out in 2 hours so don't have time

Anne - 45% (almost a 50/50 match but Anne struggles to play on the grass) Elena - 25% (from time to time Elena plays top 75 tennis but Kerber is the better player and in better form) Mel - 15% (Mel could play well enough to give herself a chance but on form top 50 players are out of reach) Katie - 10% (Peer could be so awful that Katie wins but realistically the gulf in class is far too great.) Naomi - 2% (Venus might get injured)
Anne is the favourite against King. She might not like grass but neither does King. Elena will be the slight underdog against Kerber but surely it's an opportunity that can't be missed. Mel will struggle against Bondarenko but Mel's playing well right now so you never know. Katie has a great chance at knocking out a seeded player. Peer is good of course but hardly a grass court lover and has lost quite a few matches in a row. Naomi must be horrified at her luck at Wimbledon but if you're going to play Venus at a slam it's best in the first round. Still, Naomi would do well to win 5 games.
