RE: British Women - Top 25 etc table

Thanks, amended. That's quite a team we've got going down under in January!

2009 starts here!

Mel South will be the first Brit to play a ranked match this year when Brisbane qualifying starts on Friday. She will play Ekaterina Bychkova (RUS) who is ranked 117 to Mel's 110, but only the OoP has been published so far so I don't know which seeds are in her qualifying section or if Mel is seeded herself.

The first GB top 25 table of 2009 is now available via http://www.britishtennis.net/stats.html - the women's link there will take you straight to week 1.

Given that WTA have not yet published a definitive explanation of how the rankings are going to work this year (e.g. we won't know for sure what they have done with last year's points until next Monday), all of the ranking point data on the right-hand side of the table is just my best guess based on the available info for now.

The new official (5 Jan) rankings have now been added to the women's week 1 table and used to update all the other women's pages linked to from http://www.britishtennis.net/stats.html

In guessing what the new ranking point totals would be, I was right about points from Auckland 2008 coming off, but I forgot that the WTA rankings have changed from "Best 17" to "Best 16", so the players with 17 or more counting scores have all lost one, though none of the Brits have lost more than 3 ranking places because of it and some have gained.

I've tidied up the spreadsheet I use to keep track of each player's total ranking points and when they are due to come off, so thought I might as well make that available too, so there's another new link on the (getting a bit crowded! hmm) stats page.

Like the ranking point breakdown pages for each player on the WTP site, it goes beyond TheBoiledEgg's figures (but only for the ranked Brits, obviously, goodness only know how he keeps them updated for everyone on the tour!) and shows exactly when each score is due to drop off. It also lists scores that aren't currently counting but which would be available to replace scores dropping off if they haven't been improved in the meantime.

In your unranked players points scoring list you have missed that Lisa Whybourn, Lottie Fox, Holly Richards, Helen Parish and Michelle Farley all scored points or winning a match in qualifying for Shrewsbury/Barnstaple last autumn. Also Ines Janbakhsh has an extra point for winning a qualifying match in Jounieh.

Thanks for checking. It makes sense that I'd have missed the players getting points in qualifying because I started with the last full list I had from the Slovakian site (which was just after the USO) and then went through the top 25 tables since then looking for any players in the "other players in ITF main draws" section, but snce I only put players who get into main draws there I'd have missed the ones you listed. I should probably put all points scorers in that box in future.

The extra point for Ines must not have been on the post-USO list though (she was on there, but with a point that has since come off) - I'll check it out and correct that too though.

Women's GB top 25 table and other stats updated with 12 Jan official rankings - the by country rankings have already been updated even if the main rankings page hasn't.

Jus noticed there that Anne is no5 on the WTA Race! Was wondering whether it would be worthwhile to follow tht aswell as official 53 weekly rankings?

I do so much admire the progress Anne has made.  But she won't be hanging anywhere close to no 5 in the race for very long.

Her upper targert for the year I would say is 30, i.e. in line with a really challenging rankings figure.

Clearly just a consequence of an early year good performance, though no 5 is rather kool to see, just following means watching it go down over the next little while....

That's what I feel about it too - it would mean adding an extra column to an already big table for no real benefit. You could track the Brits in the WTA race separately if you wanted to, of course, just set up another thread.

I forgot to mention yesterday, the week 3 women's table and all the stats up to 19 Jan are now available via http://www.britishtennis.net/stats.html

I'm back and the week 5 women's table is available at last (better late than never!) - all the other stuff on the stats page is up to date too.

Looks like a good week in Fed Cup so far (nice draw, but you can't ask much more of them tnan winning every match in straight sets! smile.gif), while there have been some good results in the Sutton 25K as well.

A provisional week 6 table is now up, though only 4 of the GB top 25 seem to be in action next week.

I've corrected the week 5 table as well - in my haste to get all the stats sorted when I got back, I somehow managed to show all the Brits who went out in R1 at Sutton as not having played at all. ashamed

Anne is 3-0 in Fed Cup singles play and also I don't think you can really count the doubles walkover yesterday as a victory!

Bally will be the top seed in Stockholm.
