RE: British Women - Top 25 etc table

I seem to have forgotten to post here when the last couple of weeks' tables went up, but I've just added the new (6 Dec) rankings to this week's table, which is surprisingly busy for December, with no less than 10 of the GB top 25 in action.

Just two CHs today - Robyn Beddow with a new singles CH of 1091 after joining the rankings last week and Naomi Broady with a new doubles CH of 315.

The first rankings of 2011 are now available and I have added them to the GB women's top 25 table and all the other stats. The main mover is Emily Webley-Smith, up 49 to 438.

There are a lot of falls in the bottom half of the table, but these are almost completely accounted for by a one-off addition of 20-30 players slotting into the rankings as a result of the new WTA rule about 1 or 2 scoring events being enough for a ranking from 2011 onwards if a player has gained at least 10 points in those events - you used to need 3 scoring events however well you did in the first two.

I have added the 10 Jan rankings to this week's GB women's top 25 table.

There are new singles career highs for Heather Watson, up 27 to WR 149, who becomes the youngest player currently in the top 150 (she is 8 days younger than Christina McHale, who is ranked just outside the top 100) and Tara Moore, up 3 to WR 347.

I have added to 31 Jan rankings to this week's GB women's top 25 table.

Anne K is back in the top 100 at 91 (though the number of Brits in the top 200 is down from 5 to 3, with Cav & Katie dropping out) and there are 5 singles CHs - Heather Watson up 7 to 142, Tara Moore up 11 to 336, Lucy Brown up 119 to 898 (and into the T25 table at GB no. 21), Alexandra Walker up 29 to 970 (and into the T25 table at GB no. 24=) and Daneika Borthwick up 71 to 995.

The other two Browns (Danielle and Katharina) are the players who have made way for Lucy and Alexandra.

There are new doubles CHs in the top 1000 for Heather 207, Lisa Whybourn 533 and Nicola George 622.

Poor Laura has suffered a slight fall in her doubles ranking now that last year's Aussie Open QF has dropped out.

Err, down 374 places to WR 502.

Bit meaningless really although maybe restricts her a bit re entries if wanting to play more doubles.

Heather once again leads the singles CHs this week, up 14 to 131 - she has already round about halved the distance between where she was at the start of 2011 and the top 100 and is the only GB woman with a new CH in the top 800. She also leads the new doubles CHs at 181. That is the only dubs CHs in the top 700, though outside the top 1000, youngest ranked Brit 15yo Eleanor Dean has managed to hit singles and doubles CHs for the second week in a row!

Will Georgie leave the rankings after this week, or will the 10 point rule keep her in until Clearwater points drop off?

Oops! (swiftly removes that note from the table!) ... with all the talk of the new 10-point rule helping some players to get on the rankings quicker, I somehow forgot that it will keep some players on the rankings for longer too! ashamed

Georgie Stoop has now left the rankings, sadly. Nobody has taken her place in the GB top 25 because there were 26 players on the table last week (+ Konta as well), Amanda Elliott and Alexandra Walker being tied for GB no 25 and now tied for GB no 24. However, they both have a point due to come off at the end of Miami, so Daneika Borthwick (who will have 11 points) looks certain to join the table, while Yas Clarke and Katharine Brown will have 10 points like Amanda and Alexandra.

There are two new singles CHs this week - Heather up another 9 places to 123 and Lucy Brown edging up another 3 to 879. They have both hit singles career highs 5 times already this year, together making up more than half of the 18 new singles CHs for Brits in total.

Also, Emily is back in the GB top 10 at 342 (up 42 and up from GB no. 13), dislodging Tara.

Elena has dropped out of the top 80, down 11 to WR 85.

The new 18 April WTA rankings have been added to this week's GB Top 25 table and all the other stats links.

Anne Keothavong has returned to both the singles top 100 (at 95) and the doubles top 100 (at a career high of 94), so it's a good Monday for her! smile.gif

The lone new singles career high is Samantha Murray, up 67 to 807, which means she has finally taken out the career high she set exactly 4 years and 7 months ago on 18 Sep 2006 - she has hit a new doubles career high too, at 739.

Lisa Whybourn is back at her career high (284) too and the other new doubles career high in the top 500 is Naomi Broady at 306.

Oops I seem to have missed a couple of weeks here (the stats were done, obviously, I just forgot to post on this thread)

9 May rankings now added.

Emily, up 18 to 253, has finally taken out her June 2005 career high of 262 biggrin - apart from Nick Lester's 10-year-old career high (which by playing just one Futures event since 2002, he isn't really trying to beat!), it was the longest-standing singles CH of any Brit who still has a world ranking, and she has had all kinds of injury and illness problems to overcome to get back to where she is now.

Emily has taken out her doubles career high for good measure, moving up to 239, while Hev, edging up 1 to 121, and Naomi B with a new doubles CH of 273, are the other Brits making CHs in the top 300.

In the current women's table, you have Heather Watson getting 12 points for losing in the FQR at Rome.
However, you also link to a PDF file of the qualifying draw; it states 20 points for losing in the FQR.

That's good news smile.gif I was working from http://www.wtatennis.com/SEWTATour-Archive/Rankings_Stats/howitworks.pdf, which doesn't have a line for a 64-draw Premier 5 with only two qualifying rounds. I should have thought to check the drawsheet.

6 June rankings now added.

Heather Watson is confirmed up 24 at WR 93, making her the first GB teenager to enter the WTA singles top 100 since (I think) Sarah Loosemore in 1990 (she gave up tennis at 21 to go to Oxford, hopefully Heather who is also very good academically won't stop quite that soon!) and, again subject to correction from those who know better, one of less than 20 GB women to make the top 100 since the computerised rankings began 35 years ago.

2 Virginia Wade
4 Sue Barker (*)
5 Jo Durie
10 Winnie Shaw (+)
22 Michelle Tyler
24 Annabel Croft
33 Anne Hobbs
46 Sarah Gomer
48 Anne Keothavong
49 Elena Baltacha
55 Sam Smith
56 Monique Javer
76 Sarah Loosemore
77 Clare Wood
84 Katie O'Brien
93 Heather Watson
99 Melanie South
?? Glynis Coles
?? Amanda Brown

(*) from ITF - her BBC profile says her CH was 3, the WTA site 'helpfully' says 51 in the early 80s (I assume there must be a cut-off around 1980!)

(+) I get a feeling this may have been a bit more than 35 years ago, since her top achievements in singles came in 1970 and 1971, when she reached the AO SFs and the Wimbledon QFs each time.

?? I believe they made the top 100 in the 1970s/80s but can't find a record of their CHs

There are also new singles CHs for Samantha Murray, up 115 today to 615, Nicola George up 56 to 688, Jennifer Allan, up 38 to 711, and Manisha Foster, up 72 to 761.

New doubles CHs (top 600 only): EWS, up 4 to 231, Fran Stephenson, up 3 to 395, Lisa Whybourn, up 132 to 423, Samantha Murray, up 21 to 580, and Nicola Slater, up 101 to 547.
