RE: Week 25 - Wimbledon Qualifying

There are all on grass at the Bank of England Sports Club

Really good place to go and watch as you can get really close to the action

Roehampton grass is heaven for serve-volleyers..........the courts are pretty dire, staying at the baseline is pretty much tennis suicide as the quality of the bounce is as variable as a roulette wheel

why they don't hold these qualies on the outside courts at wimbledon same as for the wc playoff, is a mystery to me

The WC playoff was held on the practice courts, not the outside courts.

The other slams are happy to play qualies on the outside courts, but they're not on grass of course. I'm guessing it' simply that Wimby want their outside courts looking pristine for the first day of play when thousands of people get let in.

Sorry if I threw a red herring there! blankstare

I was confused by the Roehampton title - in fact Wimby website says -

The 2008 Qualifying competition will be held from 16 - 20 June at the Bank of England Sports Club at Roehampton.

The Official Wimbledon Webite will be following the Qualifying event from the Bank of England Sports Ground at Roehampton with live point-by-point scores and regular news updates.

Players entering the singles events must play three rounds on grass in the week before The Championships. Unlike The Championships, there is no single 'winner' of Qualifying. Instead the players who win all three rounds 16 in the Gentlemen's Singles and 12 in the Ladies' Singles will progress, along with four pairs in each of the Ladies' and Men's Doubles events.

I suppose it is because they want the grass at Wimbly to stay at 100%. I sort of agree.

Morgan may not play Petzschner at all.

Two WCs remain, and if there's no one to give it to, it'll go to the next two people. Now the next few in line look like this -

Luczak, Peter AUS 113
Dabul, Brian ARG 114
Cuevas, Pablo URU 115
Cipolla, Flavio ITA 116
Petzschner, Philipp GER 117

None of them are in qualies barring Petz, so it could be that they aren't interested.

Not giving the last 2 WC's is a joke, but I'll ignore that and comment on the players in qualifying instead.

Not a great draw for them, but I think Goodall will win, as will Eaton, while I think Skupski and Marray have decent chances of an upset given the courts at Roehampton.

Bloomers should win as well as long as he's fit, but I don't think that Phillips has a prayer against Petzschner.

Seator and Cox are unlikely to win, but I think they could do so, depending on how well they and their opponents play.

Be surprised if we get a qualifier though, as the draws just haven't fallen for us, and the best chance is in the Goodall/Marray section

I think possibly Skupski has the best section of all, but when you look through the entire draw there arent many sections that look appetising to be honest. That must be why they call it a grand slam!!

When you look at the sections Childs and Goodall have got through in previous years you maybe wouldnt have fancied them at the time, but sometimes our advantage on grass gets players through sections you wouldnt expect.

As an aside which is the easiest section of all?

Shame Marcus Willis did not get a WC here, although he did play the play off's so may explain why not.
In all honesty I would have like Willis, Evans & Pauffley in here & then allowed the likes of Ed Corrie, George Coupland, Alex Ward etc in to the wild card play offs, as I feel they could have caused some upsets.

Exactly, Goldenslam. Our best young players (and some of the older players) deserve unconditional entries into this, not through play offs. cry.gif

Should we have a separate page for today's R1 qualifying matches otherwise if all of wimby qualies gets left on the same page then it soon becomes so long that it takes ages to follow and find where you last were?

I like the idea of having one page for first round and one for all the latter rounds.

RE: Week 25 - Wimbledon Qualifying ** please use the QR1 thread for QR1 livescore chat **

Oops, the Tiger set up a thread a minute after me LOL - I'll transfer my OoP to there and then close down my thread so we keep his poll.

Edit: all sorted to look like we never messed it up in the first place. wink I've also changed the title of this thread to try to avoid (probably unsuccessfully aww) confusion.

There isn't any obvious weak section, but section 9 doesn't have any strength in the seeds, and to be honest, Skupski's section is that not difficult with only Okun and Moodie having shown anything on the grass, and neither of them have done anything this year
