RE: Wimbledon 2008 Inter-Board Pick 'Em Competition

ROUND 4 REPORT

Once again, the pick 'em match of the day turned out to be the match of the day in every other sense too, with Andy's win over Dammit having the biggest effect on all parts of the competitions. Super Mario's win from two sets down over Verdaschoke and Baggy's loss from two sets to one up against Floppy (a player who dropped a set to Dabul in R1 - I ask you!) also had significant effects on lots of entrants, while the handful of nutters who backed Safin to go deep saw their craziness pay off again. wink.gif

TEAMS LEAGUE

Andy's late evening win saw AM.com take the lead in the teams league for the first time for quite a few pick 'ems, I think, with Centre Court, who were more evenly split between Muzza & Dammit dropping to 2nd. However, the only team to move up more than one place were the winners of R4, JM.org, up 2 to 5th, and the only team to move down more than one place were the Feddies, down 3 to 8th, who went for Richard 'Baby Fed' Gasquet big time.

INDIVIDUALS

fah51 (CC), who got 3/8 right in R4, managed to retain the individual lead but that lead was reduced to just one point by two of the many entrants who equal top scored for the day with 4/8, lejla_roger (RF), up 2 to 2nd, and James Comerford (BB), up 2 to 3rd.

The two highest climbers, both with 4/8 in R4, were Drikke (MT), up 97 to 211st, and mccriddsta (TY), up 97 to 219th.

The biggest faller, getting no quarter-finalists right at all, was riggelpop (AR), down 148 to 379th.

OUTLOOK

Amazingly, nobody has more than two of their semi-finalists left in, though the vast majority of entrants do have exactly two. While in most cases, those two are Fed and Rafa, there is a fair bit of variation, with about 20 entrants having just Muzza and Fed getting through to the semis, a couple with just Ancic and Nadal and one (stalefish2 (AR) in 356=) with just Safin & Nadal.

The pick %s for the QFs bear this out - note that not a single one of us (out of 409) had picked either of the players in the 3rd QF, Clément or Schüttler, to get this far!

TEAM KO

Andy's win helped to produce an 'Aberdeen Cup'-like Final:

It's looking like the main movements from now on (unless you are one of the 1% who have picked Safin or Ancic to reach the semis) will come when we know who eventually wins the title.

QFs REPORT

Nobody had either of the players in the unfinished QF reaching the semis, so the detailed results at http://www.britishtennis.net/competitions.html have been produced as if all QFs have been completed (i.e. with "% of Max." based on 124 matches having been played and "WP SLR" showing how many finalist picks each entrant has left) and this report reflects that too.

TEAMS LEAGUE and OUTLOOK

AM.com managed to retain the lead in the teams league, but Andy's loss allowed Centre Court to cut that lead to just 0.15 points and they will win the league unless Safin beats Federer and then does not beat Rafa in the Final, in which case AM.com will hold on. The current top three will remain the same (though the order may change) unless Federer wins the Final, in which case his own forum will take 2nd place.

The winners of the QF round, TAT (all of whom picked both Fed & Rafa to reach the semis) were the biggest movers of the day, up 3 to 6th (and in the top half of the table at last), with MTF, down 1 to 7th, dropping behind them and T4Y, down 2 to 9th, dropping behind both them and the Feddies, who remain in 8th place.

Down towards the bottom of the table, Tennisopolis overtook the Dammitaires, while Duckboy's early loss really began to bite in this round and the Ducklings are now quite a long way adrift in last place.

INDIVIDUAL

fah51 (CC) still has a 1 point lead at the top and with all but one of yesterday's top 40 getting 2/4 semi-finalists correct, the only change in the top 40 is Fitz (JM) dropping 15 to 23rd after his Ancic pick didn't come off, though obviously the entrants who had been just below him all shift up a place as well.

MOVERS

For the most part, those who picked both Fed & Rafa to reach the semis moved up a bit and those who missed one or both of them dropped a lot. Unfortunately, unlike RG where picking Monfils to reach the semis was what won it for the individual champion, the two less predictable quarters at Wimbledon were so full of shocks that only one entrant picked either of the unexpected semi-finalists. That entrant, Stalefish2 (AR), up 11 to 345=, did not pick Fed to reach the semis too, so did not manage to steal a march on the rest of us.

The fastest climbers were nicki (AM) & SoftHandsMacGruber (TN), both up 15 to 174=.

The biggest faller was the highest-placed of those who did not get any semi-finalists correct, dssl973/Ma$terpiec£ (AM), down 159 to 332nd. BritBot (semis = Boggo v Nole, Eaton v Muzza) had a pretty bad time too and is now level on points with the ATP race bot, which has had an unbelievably bad time throughout the tournament.

OUTLOOK

249 entrants picked a Fed v Rafa Final, 133 picked just one of them to get there and just 27 have no finalists left, so unless the top two seeds fail to reach the Final, this one is going to go right to the wire!

TEAM KO

FINAL: (6) Rusedski.co.uk lead (4) AndyMurray.com 9.74-9.13

15-16: (11) RichardGasquet.net lead (16) AndyRoddick.com 8.75-7.9

POTD was taking too much time. I was hoping someone else would take up that baton, but nobody did.

As for the revised banners, I've been trying to get the TAT people to change theirs, not least because the people who use it there are nearly all men - thankfully they've now given up in that and spend their time talking about a 12-letter word beginning with m instead - both the male and female varieties. I'm not sure whether pick 'em has an unintended corrupting influence or whether they were always like that!

As for the CC women - hands off, they're mine! smile.gif

The inevitable tumble, but I think I'll end up in a nice position if Nadal can take the title.

DAY 11 REPORT

No more surprises today, with the top two seeds winning in straight sets. However, 23% of entrants had picked someone else to win each match, so there was a fair bit of movement in the tables.

TEAMS LEAGUE

By winning their third round so far (R1, R3 and the SFs), Centre Court moved back up 1 to the top slot with a lead of more than two points and are now certain to win their first slam teams league, after finishing 2nd in the RG team league (winning the KO there) and after already winning an AMS pick 'em this year.

Rusedski.co.uk moved up 1 to 2nd, but the grinners can be dislodged by the Feddies if Fed wins the title.

The big losers of the day were the two Murray teams, AM.com dropping 2 to 3rd and JM.org falling 3 to 8th, allowing TAT, 1 to 4th, to grab a place in the top five for now just behind BT.net.

The Ducklings jumped off a cliff (should they now be called the Lemmings?) because so many of them had picked their hero to beat Rafa today.

INDIVIDUALS and OUTLOOK

fah51 (CC) will be able to celebrate having been in the lead for a week on Saturday after being propelled into the top slot by winning R3 but it is much tighter at the top than it was at RG, with just 8 points separating the top 20.

The top three in the individual competition will either be all Rafa pickers or all Fed pickers, but who actually comes out on top could depend on a single R1 pick!

Only two people dropped out of the top 10 - James Comerford (BB), down 12 to 14th, didn't pick Fed to reach the Final and MaryS (AR), down 43 to 48th, had a Nole v Duckboy Final so didn't score anything - it is only the fact that the semi-finalists in the middle quarters were not generally predicted either that kept her in the top 5 for so long.

Joining the top 10 as a result: mmmm8 (TA), up 2 to 9th, the only TAT member who seems to have made a successful transition from clay to grass, and Flintstone (CC), who ensures that the winning team currently have no less than 5 of the individual top 10!

MOVERS

There were 8 joint fastest climbers, all moving up 51 places from just inside the top 300 to just inside the top 250, but the main moves were downwards, with the biggest faller out of all those picking neither Fed nor Rafa to reach the Final being Romix.Rod (AR), down 173 to 258th.

Britbot finally dropped behind Racy as his Boggo v Murray dream Final failed to come off! Four entrants are still behind Britbot, but two of them will overtake if Fed wins the title.

TEAM KO

FINAL: (6) Rusedski.co.uk lead (4) AndyMurray.com 24.21-21.63 - Rusedski.co.uk have won the team KO!
3-4: (7) RafaelNadalFans lead (1) Centre Court Forum 25.4-22.86
5-6: (14) TalkAboutTennis lead (12) JamieMurray.org 23.37-21
7-8: (15) Tennisopolis.com lead (8) BritishTennis.net 21.56-20.95
9-10: (2) MensTennisForums lead (9) Other Boards 21.5-19.5
11-12: (13) Tennis4you.com lead (3) RogerFederer.com 20.2-19.94
13-14: (10) Assorted Individuals lead (5) LleytonHewitt.biz 21.05-20.5
15-16: (11) RichardGasquet.net lead (16) AndyRoddick.com 20.38-12.61

The lead can only change hands in two of these matches - if Fed wins, then perhaps not surprisingly the Rafa fans will lose 3rd place to CC (though since the Rafa fans aren't a full team, CC were already going to get the 3rd place ranking points anyway, so only pride is at stake there) and the Feddies will overtake T4Y.

Eblunt will be glad to hear that the new overall pick 'em rankings were published in the early hours of this morning at http://www.britishtennis.net/pickem/ranking.htm?n=1. Wimbledon turned out to be the tournament when the people who only started to play pick 'ems this year (e.g. the Centre Court mob) finally ended up with enough scores to choose from to make an assault on the top 20, so quite a few of us have moved down despite our points totals going up.

I'll add a report later in the week, probably.

Oops, that report never appeared, never mind.

The big news since Wimbledon (kind of funny, but not good) is that no. 1 team Centre Court have imploded, with quite a few of their mods having closed their accounts and all the pick 'em threads (as far as I can see) getting wiped.

It makes bt.net (and even am.com) look like an oasis of calm ...
