The SE spot here is a joke. NONE of the players in Kitzy (it's an ISG, so you can get an SE into a Masters from it) have a direct entry here, so you may as well as call it the Toronto wild card play off.
Nalby, Monaco, plus Chela, Calleri, Acasuso and Lee from the alts list are out. Canas, Acasuso and Gulbis are now in, while the qualies cut has dropped to an unbelievably low 290.
So for good or bad, with Nalbandian out, Andy will now be seeded 8th and get a bye.
I guess the best thing is that, presuming he wins his first match ( 2nd round ), he avoids the rest of the top 8 seeds in the last 16.
Possible opponents from seeds 9 -12 would be Wawrinka, Gasquet, Almagro or Stepanek ( if they get through ). Not bad. Maybe prefer not to give Gasquet opportunity for revenge at this time.
Think the SE will go to Schuettler, then Del Potro, Hanescu, Melzer (in that order), with the highest ranked of those who wins their match today getting it (Starace has withdrawn already, so can't take it, and is playing San Marino anyway)
Santoro has apparantly withdraw as well, so Cilic is now first alternate.
Out of the 4 seeds he could face.... anyone other than Gasquet would be fine, as they are all beatable, but Gasquet outplayed Murray for 2 1/2 sets at Wimbledon, so would still be favourite to beat Murray if they played
No-one wanted the SE spot in the end, so it ended up being cleared!
Surely one of Del Potro, Starace, Hanescu or Melzer would have fancied playing in Toronto, but apparantly they didn't, so it lets Lapentti into the main draw (but Del Potro is now first alternate, so hasn't officially withdrawn yet, which if he turned the SE down, you'd think he would have done)
Belucci is next to get in, and he's ranked 68! So much for all the top players playing Masters Series events!
Qualies cut is at 363, with 3 lower ranked WC's to be added as well!
And it went even lower in the end, as Almagro has pulled out as well, just before qualifying began to let Thomaz Belucci into the main draw, ranked 68!
And the alternate who replaced Belucci in qualifying is so good, that he doesn't exist on the ATP website, having never played a main draw match before!
Why couldn't there be any Brits playing this, especially if they could have had Dustov's spot, who now gets 8 points for beating an unranked player!
Murray is a bye in R1 then plays a qualifier in R2. If he gets through that he could face Safin/Querrey/Bolelli or Wawrinka. Other seeds in his quarter - Verdaso and Djokovic. He's in Nadal's half.
And considering some of the mugs who are seeded to qualify here, I don't think Andy could have asked for a better draw than that, at least to begin with!
Should ease into the 3rd round, where he should get past the 4 potential opponents, although I'd expect him to be himself a drop a set in that match.
And then Djokovic in the QF's.... well, it can only get better from his previous efforts against him, so avoiding a bagel should be Muzza's aim this time. (presuming Djoko gets past Ancic/Dancevic in round 2, although I don't see why he wouldn't)
QF here wouldn't be a bad result to be honest, and would solidify his top 10 position, and probably give him a great chance of a top 8 seed for the US Open
