RE: Week 27 - Challenger ($75k+H) - Dublin, Ireland

Brilliant win for Jonny, and even if Pless didn't play well, it's still good that he was able to take advantage of it and get the win.

Hope Slabba can join him in the QF's later, and that would be a great match to have if they played each other.

Fabulous to have Jonny back and winning. Finally have more players competing to take more interest in.

L16: Alex Slabinsky WR 333 lost to Bjorn Rehnquist (SWE) WR 236 by 7-6(2) 6-4 cry
L16: (PR) Jonny Marray WR 1598 beat (4) Kristian Pless (DEN) WR 126 by 1 & 4 biggrin

QF: (PR) Jonny Marray WR 1598 v Bjorn Rehnquist (SWE) WR 236

From yesterday's preview: 30-year-old Rehnquist had a career high of 146 in 2002 but has had a much leaner time of late. He has beaten all of the Brits he has played in the last three years (Bammy, Josh, Hutch, Del, Marray, Aucks) except Boggo, who edged him out in three sets on his way to the Valencia Challenger title last year.

In fact, Jonny has a 0-2 record against Rehnquist, losing 6-2 2-6 6-2 in the Helsinki Challenger in 2005 and 7-6(4) 6-1 in the New Delhi Challenger in 2003. However, the Swede was higher-ranked than he is now at that stage, though so was Jonny of course!

Disappointing to see Slabba lose as this was a match that I thought he could win to follow up on his effort from yesterday, and a match he should be winning if he wants to progress up the rankings.

Hope Jonny can win tomorrow, because there's a SE in it for him if he does, so I guess he'll be going with Slabba to Israel to play the challenger there if he does win rather than go to North America (or of course he could choose neither of these and not take it)

Surprisingly only two seeds get through to the QFs - Muller(2) and Smeets (6)

Agreed on Slabba, I thought he might have been able to follow up with a win. My feeling on him is that he never strings enough wins together at a decent level to really move up the rankings, though he is quite slight so maybe he'll be a late developer, hope so. Hisupside is he's been very good with injuries and half the battle is playing a lot, which obviously he does. If you can enter enough events you'll always have a good week somewhere down the line.

Would have been great for us to have a guaranteed semi finalist in a 75K so it's a real shame, hope Jonny can salvage British pride so to speak tomorrow.

Jonny and Neilsen are also through to dubs semi's.

On Jonny, I dont think you can get an SE unless you are actually entered for a tournament. The only event he entered as far as I know is Felixstowe, and as he is playing Manchester I very much doubt he'll go off to Israel or USA for a one week only event.

He was going to make a decision about Felixstowe after this week, but given that he's playing a minimum of six matches this week, (hopefully more) I expect he'll have next week off and prepare for Manchester.

After Manchester he was expecting to train the early part of week 30 and then over to Brazil sometime later in the week and then play the two Challengers in Brazil weeks 31 & 32.

Looks like Jonny's match went 3 sets, or at least 2 long sets then if it hasn't been updated yet

Jonny won the first set and a break up in the second when it rained, they are now going to finish the match indoors, dont have the exact scores.

Well, if he will play a guy called Rehn-quist what do you expect? (hurriedly collects coat)

It must be quite tough having to finish a match on a different surface from the one you started it on, but better to have to do it from that position. Come on! smile
