Yes they are still used to allocate some Wimbledon qualifying WCs and are referred to on the LTA site's report about the DFS Classic qualifiers today:
"Next stop for Broady is the Wimbledon wildcard playoff at Aorangi Park, starting Tuesday 10th June."
Most of the Wimbledon main draw and qualifying WCs should be announced on Monday evening, with probably 3 mens and 2 womens qualifying WCs determined by the Aorangi Park tournament - but it isn't easy to find out information about the event.
Draper said in 2006, on the eve of his first Wimbledon in charge of the sport. "We feel additional lucky loser wild cards (to those who lost in the since abandoned play-offs that year) do not help in creating a winning culture in British tennis"
The above is quoted from todays Times. Are they abandoned or not?
If they are going ahead, why cant they be in groups of 4 or 8 with the winners going through (like a qualies draw)? Why does it have to be a larger draw that goes all the way to a final and produces only one winner (like a main draw) and therefore, losers?
Have the LTA really not considered this?????????????????????
It's pretty mixed signals really this year. I didn't think they were gonna do it again but this year everyone's been on about the playoffs and yet there are more people screaming: "what playoffs?"
From what I understand it's a 16 man draw, with 11 direct entries to the highest ranked players who want them, and then 5 wild cards to the lower ranked players...
Given who is playing this week still and where they are playing (and the fact that he assume Slabba, Ward and Bloomers will get qualifying WC's and maybe Skupksi too), these would be the 11 players
