How long do you think she will stay top 100. Not long i dont think. what a wasted opportunity. Another one. Bring on the juniors give them a chance.
Anne got into the top 100 without gaining any points on the grass so it is not unreasonable to think that she will continue to struggle to win matches on grass (certainly at tour level), but should still have a decent chance of remaining in the top 100.
The bulk of her points were gained by reaching the final of 50K and 75K events, and the 65 points she got for her semi-final run in a tier IV in India.
Her results this season suggest that she is on course to be top 100 at the end of the year, though clearly she will need to produce some good displays on the hardcourts if she is to achieve this goal.
I do think that criticising Anne this season is just ridiculous as she is the outstanding british player for 2008 and her achievements are far superior to any other brit given their respective talents.
Anne will stay in the top 100 if she plays like this, I'm sure. She is unable to beat top 100 players normally, but makes up for it by being very consistent in Challengers.
But to progress into the 80s, she'll need to discover something new and she definitely cannot lose matches like she did today.
Bad loss, as this was a match she should have won, and was in a position to do so, so it has to go down as a missed chance.
Seems to be the same problem with Anne that she gets most of her points from challengers and beating lower ranked players, which is perfectly acceptable, but she rarely beats players above her in the rankings which is going to stop her getting any higher than she is currently ranked.
She recovered though to her doubles match 7-6(5), 6-3
I have read with interest all your comments to my opinions on this site and have come to realize you are all just sat there living in hope that someone will pull off some shocks, its just a pity that 99.95% of time you are let down only to come up with some excuse of why they lost but didnt they do well. You need to wake up and smell the coffee and realize they have not got what it takes and its time to give all the teenage players all the chances that the rest of them have wasted over the years. You can make as many comments as you like to this but the fact remains we lose too many matches when we shouldnt.
When you say teenagers, what age are you talking about? I don't think it's always the best idea to give wildcards to players who are too young (Laura Robson, for example, would benefit much more from main draw wildcards in a couple of years than she would now).

Of course we live in hope that our girls will pull off the upsets, and the fact they don't a lot of the time does suggest that they aren't ever going to be good enough to get past the top 100 marker.
Today Anne should have won, playing against an opponent she's beaten in the past, has never won a match on grass, and who she had a break up 3 times in the first set. But she lost, which is disappointing and confirms that this is the level she's at.
Keothavong has had a good season, but she'll never get past the top 75, and I think most of us have realised that (in fact, reaching the top 100 surprised me as I didn't think she was good enough to do so)
Of course we want our players to win, but at the moment this group of players are solid enough at challenger level, but don't quite look good enough to push on and regularly win matches at WTA level (Cavaday looked the best as a junior, but has gone backwards over the last year it seems)
Strange, the last time I looked at GBTG, everyone seemed to be scared to death of making any criticism at all - that was a while ago, admittedly, all the fawning on there put me off going back.
At least the women have been making progress this year, though I agree that a few of them seem to choke a bit too often (even if they weren't expected to win this week, you need to at least sometimes take those chances when you get them) and if they didn't, they'd be even higher-ranked.

People like Elliott, I knowshe has lost some matches recently which could have been winners but i personally think she for one should have been in the main draws. ( I dont fully understand the wildcard situations). I know Stoop is 20 now but her as well alongwith Fitzpatrick,Smith Broady Clarke. We seem to stick the same people in year in year out and they justdont deliver the goods so yes i do think they should give the young ones a go. I could go on about this till the cows come home but i am not a quick typer and it takes me ages with 2 fingers
I agree they have made alot of headway. Its just so frustating especially when they are in GB tournies when they get themselves into winning positions and then blow it. I do believe we have the better players we just cannot win the matches. I am hoping now that some of the youngsters in the qualies win a few matches even qualify and get their ranking up. We have so much potential there they just need to win these matches.
I agree with the last point of giving Elliott, Broady and Stoop main draw WCs. But it's not like the LTA or AELTC are interested in them going to Brits.
