Is that Mel's Best ever win on rankings. Really good stuff from her and it looks like she could have a chance in the third round as well.
Nope. Her best would be over Francesca Schiavone at Wimbledon in 2006, the Italian was ranked 14 (roughly). 3rd round opponent will either be Nakamura (17) who lost in 1st round at Surbiton or Sorana Cirstea who destroyed Morita in round 1, but I think prefers clay, then again maybe she also likes grass judging by her dismissal of last years surbiton finalist...still it's a chance for Mel.
Thanks for that. Mel's win just underlines again how the tide has turned in the womens game. Ok, there not world beaters (yet), but it's great to have a whole bunch of girls really making solid progress. Take Murray out of the equation and the women are doing much better than their counterparts. Good to see them making the headlines more and great signs for the future. Hope Katie and Naomi can keep it going and make it 3 in rd3.
Great win for Mel today and this is turning into another good tournament for the women with Katie and Naomi having good chances to join her in the 3rd round as well.
Bad loss for Anne today though and she isn't going to stay in the top 100 for long with those kinds of results.
Well done Mel! In 2006 it was Wimbledon, 2007 Eastbourne and this year Birmingham for big wins on show courts. She thrives but Anne struggles in this environment.
