RE: Week 24 - WTA Tier 3 - Birmingham

What a relief. I had an awful feeling that Katie was going to lose after bagelling Alla in the first set, clearly the Russian found her feet on grass, but Katie managed to hang on and win - picking up some much needed points with Eastbourne and Wimbledon 2nd rounds to defend. Next up for Katie is another Russian, this time Yaroslava Shvedova who came through qualifying to upset the big serving Uzbek Amanmuradova (10)

All credit To A Elliott, but when you are in a winning position they should be taking this. All to often we lose matches from winning positions, and afterwards are showered with praise for doing well, which she has but she should have won it. Im sure deep down she feels the same. british women need to win these matches to go forward all too often they lose matches like these and end up falling by the wayside and end up retiring in their early 20s. Anyway great win by Cavaday and another win for O brien in much the same vein as all her matches. Goodluck to Anne and Mel and all second round GB players.

Very true, there have been many close losses for British women in recent years - Amanda Janes/Kean seemed to end up on the wrong end of many heartbreakers. Yes Amanda Elliott had her chances and I'm gutted that she didn't progress to the second round, but she won her way through qualies, got some experience and hopefully under Jens Gerlach (who coached Myskina to the French Open title) guidance can win in future situation of a similar nature.

Mel breaks for a 3-2 lead and then holds to go up by 4-2.

Lets hope so.  Just a shame she only gets 4 points for what she achieved in qualifying.  I hope that more than one  girl wins a match at Wimbledon and get some through qualifying to show that there is progress being made and back up what has been achieved already this year.

Nice draw for Naomi - I didn't think Rao would take out Kvitova (well done to Rao, too). Shvedova should be beatable, too, I guess - although this is Katie we're talking about.

Dire draw for Mel but it's to be expected when you're a WC and into the second round.

Shvedova easily beat the 10th seed so she certainly won't be a pushover.

Shvedova is a good player. She won a title last year and is reallu under ranked because of injuries. She'll be a tough match for Katie.

Naomi should win but who knows with the year shes having.

Mel has a good shot if she plays well. Bammer is not that good on grass and her ranking is on the way down.

And on the subject of Amanda, yes its tough that she lost but this was her first WTA MD, you can hardly expect her to win. She had a MP on Rezais serve which anything can happen on grass. All you want is for her to learn and next time take her chances.
