Week 23 - Challenger (€30,000+H) - Sassuolo, Italy

QR1: Morgan Phillips WR 1737 v (q8) Evgeniy Kirillov (RUS) WR 374

Nice to see Morgan aiming high smile but with this draw he's probably wishing he entered the weak Italian Future instead. cry

He is just saving up all his bad luck (incl his injury) and then one day it will all smooth over to his rise to the top 200 !!!!

** Just wakes up from armchair ** punching the air as Phillips wins his first ATP event **

Not a great draw at all for Morgan, but I guess if he's entering these events he obviously believes he can win matches in them, so that must tell us something about the kind of form he thinks he is in.

I think he'll lose in straights, but hopefully I'll be wrong and can beat Kirillov

could be tough....Kirrilov has a huge forehand, really good indoors but dunno about his clay pedigree

All 8 seeds are in the top 400 and the our who are seeded to qualify are in the top 300, including our old friend Rui Machado, who is the the top seed in Morgan's section. cry

FABULOUS win for Morgan ...

QR1: Morgan Phillips WR 1737 beat (q8) Evgeniy Kirillov (RUS) WR 374 by 1 & 3 biggrinbiggrin

... but he won't get any ranking points for it because:

QR2: Morgan Phillips WR 1737 lost to Horacio Zeballos (MEX) WR 385 by 4 & 4 cry

What a dire draw that was - Zeballos was effectively the no. 9 seed. Great win in QR1 though, I think we can say Morgan's back. smile

It's not much consolation, but Zeballos 'reward' is to face probably death by Machado. wink

Very encouraging stuff from Morgan here with a brilliant win over Kirilov and then pushed Zeballos close (and Zeballos beat Baker 3 and 1 this year on clay), so it shows the level that Morgan is at.

Just needs to start getting the points, but he doesn't seem to be entering futures though so maybe he's either trying challenger qualifying, or is just going to show up and qualify at places.

It is possible that Mors played this because he had no option - his doubles involvement made it too late to sign in for qualies at the Italian Futures that's played this week, I think.

I've noticed that he tends to do far better when he's playing in Italy - won a Futures title there, qualified for his only Challenger there (in Rimini) and now this.

Straight sets with bagel against Machado? Wow! What a rubbish draw Morgan had then ...
