Remember that Rice beat Rmus in 3 sets last week though, so losing to him was a bit of a backwards step.

It has, presumably, been raining in Maribor, as Josh's match is on the schedule for tomorrow (Friday); if he wins - well, if Jamie can beat Voltchkov ... - his quarter-final is also scheduled for tomorrow! Good job he's a very fit young man.

Not surprised Josh won that, he has the better, more natural clay-court game....reminds me a bit of Andreev at times with the massive swings on the forehand

I hadn't realised that Markus Hipfl is playing this!

Hipfl has a career high of 63 and I thought he had retired, but now it seems he's back - played two Challenger qualies in April and a wild card here.

That's an interesting place to stop for the night ... Semrajc is WR 736 (has never playeda Brit before) so this is good going by Josh so far.

on knife edge! I hope Josh can start strong tomorrow! The delay may guarantee him an SE for next week though?

I think Josh deserves rather more of a fuss than we've made of him to date. Daniel Lustig, his second round victim, is world ranked 414!! And, as Steven mentions somewhat sotto voce, the guy Josh is just two games from beating in the quarters is ranked some 450 places above him. Terrific work, Josh - keep it going!

How good the result was against Lustig depends on how much the reason for the retirement affected him in the 1st set, but Josh is clearly doing well in his QF. I don't think you can get an SE unless you reach at least the semis, even if the QFs finish late, so that's a double incentive to wake up fast tomorrow!

... and by coincidence in the week when France celebrated the first time they had five players in the last 16 since 1971, when Gerald Battrick, the best Welsh tennis player ever, was the last surviving Brit. wink

Has there been any other top 100 Welsh player that you know of, by the way?

I don't think so (not that I'd necessarily know, not taking a keen interest in Welsh tennis!) but a quick web search returns the intriguing fact that JPR Williams won Junior Wimbledon before deciding to concentrate on rugby - see http://www.100welshheroes.com/en/biography/jprwilliams

I think the rules for SE are that as long as you are still playing in the tournament when the qualifying draw is made then you get the SE, regardless of what round you are in (technically you can get it in round 1 if the match hasn't been played)

Great week for Josh and hope he starts well today and can get to the semis to keep a great week going
