Baker Aims for Wimby Return

by Bert Mitchell Glasgow Evening Times

JAMIE BAKER has been given the green light to target a Wimbledon comeback.

The 21-year-old Glaswegian, the Great Britain No.2, was struck down in March by a potentially life-threatening virus which reduced the platelet level within his blood.

Recovered, he has now passed his latest batch of tests with flying colours and determined to give himself every chance of making the tournament which starts in the last week of June.

Baker said: "The test results have been getting progressively better and the latest batch were as good as I could have hoped for.

"As a result, I will travel down to Loughborough University and my training camp later today and begin my preparations in earnest. It is still a long shot, but at least I am now fit enough to do the work that will be needed to make it."

Meanwhile, Andy Murray believes it will be a personal triumph if he reaches the French Open's second week.

Murray's only previous appearance at Roland Garros in 2006 ended in a first-round defeat.

But the 21-year-old said: "I played well over the last few weeks on clay - certainly better than I have done in previous years. Getting through to the second week would be a great result."

Fantastic news. The fact that a come back is quite close is great. But to be ready for Wimbledon would be amazing.

That's one less wild card going to the non-Brits. clap.gifparty.gif

Great news. smile.gif The report makes it sound like he hasn't been at Loughborough for a while, contrary to the impression I was given. If not, then he'll probably get his cards from us and AM.com when he gets there.

Don't worry, they were as much about wishing him well with his tennis rehabilitation as anything else.

Great news to see Baker getting back to fitness and hopefully he will be fit enough to play at Wimbledon, although I wouldn't expect too much from him on his first match back.

Still, as long as he's fit that's all that really matters

Fabulous news biggrin.gif I didn't think he'd be ready in time personally given the severity of the illness but WHEEEEEEEEE! biggrin.gif *is not on a slide*

That is excellent news. I'm very happy to hear he's OK and well enough to get back training. Hopefully he can make it to Wimbers, and have a stunning run through to the final as his return to tennis...hmm maybe I'm getting slightly ahead of myself there hmm.gifwink.gif

Jonny was hitting with Jamie on Tuesday. He said Jamie can hit for about half an hour or so at the moment and is easing himself in as quickly as he can manage but obviously he was very ill and has to take it sensibly.

Before people get too carried away, I think he was declaring wimby as an ambitious target rather than declaring himself fit, so let's hope he's there but probably not expect it yet.
