Week 21 - Futures F8 (10k) - Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

QR1: (q5) Jonathan Kinsella WR 1481 v Shane Lamely (USA) UNR

Should the American slide lamely to defeat ashamed Jonny will play the winner of Juan Manuel Marucco (ARG) UNR and Diego Beltranena (GUA) UNR ... i.e. Marucco.

Extending the comeback he has made (after being out for three years) after the scare of Rob Dee equalling his record, Diego seems to be determined to make sure that nobody gets near it again. wink (or to match Dee and win one, of course)

Kyle Brassington has scraped into the main draw here as a DA.

FQR: (q5) Jonathan Kinsella WR 1481 v Juan Manuel Marucco (ARG) UNR

Marucco inflicted a 56th consecutive loss on Diego Beltranena, but allowed the Guatemalan 3 games, so barring disasters, Jonny should manage to join Kyle in the main draw.

Hmm. At least I resisted the temptation to mention it again after he retired from the match.

FQR: (q5) Jonathan Kinsella WR 1481 beat Juan Manuel Marucco (ARG) UNR by 2 & 0 smile.gif

... proving that dropping three games to Beltranena really does mean you are likely to get bagelled yourself in you next match!

L32: Kyle Brassington WR 1175 v (3) Marinko Matosevic (AUS) WR 532
L32: (Q) Jonathan Kinsella WR 1487 v TBA

A rubbish draw for Kyle, while Jonny won't know who he's playing until the last two FQR matches have been played at the start of Monday's play. There is one Q v Q match, but qualifiers have been drawn against oth of the top two seeds as well.

Not a great draw for Kinsella either - he plays 4th seed Schults

Some more or less expected bad news combined with some unexpected good news!

L32: Kyle Brassington WR 1175 lost to (3) Marinko Matosevic (AUS) WR 532 by 5 & 0 cry
L32: (Q) Jonathan Kinsella WR 1487 beat (4) Peter Shults (USA) WR 600 by 3 & 4 biggrin

L32: (Q) Jonathan Kinsella WR 1487 v (Q) Richard Johnson (USA) UNR

As far as I can tell, Shults is one of the two highest-ranked players Jonny has ever beaten (the other was Mergea in Gatineau in early March) and this is the first time he has beaten a top 600 player in straight sets. He even allowed Shults less games than Jamie Baker did just over a year ago. wink

What a reward too - he plays the winner of an unranked qualifier v unranked wild card match. smile

It looks like Kyle put up a good display in the 1st set of his match but fell away fast when he failed to win it.

I strongly suspect that this may have been a driving force behind the victory. The pressure for Shults to win would have been pretty high.

Nice one Johnny, I wondered if their coach will be online to enlighten us with how the matches went.

I always thought Johnny was older then 24 for some reason, just looked at his profile.

I don't think courtcrazy has come online since about a week after he first posted here. I hope we didn't do anything to drive him away! It's a pity, because it was interesting getting some more background from him.

Brilliant win for Kinsella and finally he gets some reward out of this trip to Mexico. And with an unranked opponent up next there's an excellent chance he can make a QF here which would be great for him

Jonny takes advantage of his draw opening up to win his 4th match in a row and reach his first Futures QF. smile.gif

L16: (Q) Jonathan Kinsella WR 1487 beat (Q) Richard Johnson (USA) UNR by 4-6 6-4 6-1 smile.gif

QF: (Q) Jonathan Kinsella WR 1487 v (5) Nima Roshan (USA) WR 609

Roshan is at his career high and beat Bammy 4-6 6-3 6-2 in qualifying for the Mexico City Challenger last month, with two previous straight sets victories against unranked Brits giving him a 3-0 H2H against GB players overall. It'll be a major surprise if Jonny wins this one, but he has already doubled his ranking points this week and he will rise about 200 places in the rankings at the end of RG, which can't be bad!

Jonny's win means that the GB men were 5-0 in Futures on Wednesday. smile.gif
