I think Amanda must have woken up a little injured. I fully expected Anne to come back a little but to win every game today against someone known for digging in like Amanda.

Well done to all thr Brit girls. The only Brits that lost, lost to Brits. Not often we can say that about our challengers!

Great results and good to have them posted together at the end of the day but why didn't poor Katie get a smile Steven?  I'm sure she deserved one more than Anne K who beat someone ranked 300 places below her.  Happy for all the girls who won today and keeping my fingers crossed for more success tomorrow.

Reports of the girls from today:

Keovathavong vs. Elliott what a disappointment this was as Elliott was shocking today. She came into the match a set up, but didnt win a game today, and is hard to fathom how she was leading. Anne did play well, but she wouldnt have needed to as Elliott couldnt hit 3 balls in a row in the court

Stoop vs. Fitzpatrick possibly the worst match of the day (barring a truly horrible match between Kulikova and Yuan were both players pushed the ball into the middle of the court and had long 20 shot rallies where the hit slowly to each other before one of them missed.... for every single point) as both players made far too many errors and 80% of points must have finished with an unforced error. Both players tried to attack, but just couldnt do so well and just made an error when they tried.

Fitzpatrick saved a match point at 4-5 in the second, but with a net court which was fitting. But Stoop should have already won having twice been a break up but thrown it away, and was a break up in the 1st as well. Tiebreak was terrible as well with Fitzpatrick double faulting at least twice, and Stoop once, and her blowing a **5-2 lead before eventually winning 8-6... with an error from Fitzpatrick. Stoop was slightly better, but will get destroyed in the next round if she doesnt improve

Broady vs. South this however was a very enjoyable match, with the only downside being Mel Souths mother shouting come on Mel after every point. Broady started the better of the two with some great hitting, but gradually as the match wore on she made more and more errors and started to hand the match to South.

Broady has a huge serve and forehand, but although the backhand is very good, it is too inconsistent and she makes too many silly errors of it. And lets not talk about some of her volleys as well....

Broady saved 6 break points in the 3rd set before she was broken at 3-3, and most of them were with huge serves, as 3 were aces and 2 unreturnables, and I think shed have won if this was on grass as she would have just made enough big serves to not have her weaker groundstrokes exposed she has to get the first strike in or she struggles.

OBrien vs. King good match on the whole from Katie, despite losing he first set. In the first set she was just missing the lines with her shots, but improved over the next two sets and looked quite good, although the second serve is still a concern.

She got a break up in the 3rd but gave it away and looked as if she was going to choke, but battled hard to fight back and break again when I had a feeling she would fall away. Finished off strongly with some huge groundstrokes as well and looks in good form at the moment

Baltacha vs. Klepac how did Baltacha lose a set to her opponent? Didnt the first set though, but the evidence of the last 2 sets suggest she couldnt have played the match. Baltacha broke her 7 times in a row (from 5-3 first set to 0-5 3rd set when she finally held), and her opponent looked to have nothing to hurt her at all, and had a pretty weak serve.

Baltacha did play quite well with some huge forehands and some huge serving as well, and back on the grass shell be dangerous.

I think Gullickson is continuing family trait of being an excellent player.

I assume she's a relative of the Gullickson bros.

Hope Katie O'Brien can oust her with grass court craft!
