Disappointing draw, then. Hardly anyone in there and both Kat Brown and Broady in Voegele's section.
Amy Askew could get the chance to play Gajdosova if she can beat Hawkins (which won't be easy) and that'll be a great experience for her. Also, Rae could have well done some damage but she's due to play Alexandra Stevenson in the second round. Borwell's the only one with a half chance, I think.
Why are Jennifer Ren and more importantly, Yasmin Clarke not there?
Anyone still in singles or doubles at Roland Garros at Surbiton sign-in time will have been automatically withdrawn - so Casey Dellacqua will not be in the main draw regardless.
Voegele's section is a good one to be in - as far as I can see from the ITF site it's her first major senior tournament on grass
It looks as if Katie will need to get to the SF stage to move into the top 100 because she will lose the 7 points she collected by getting to the QF last year. If she doesn't make it at Surbiton her last chance will be Birmingham. After that she will be defending 50 points form Eastbourne and 60 points from Wimbeldon.
This is taken from the LTA site. A good start for Anna and Naomi but there are two worrying points:
1) Jos and Kat retiring 2) Carl Maes's quote suggests we currently only have 6 in the main draw. Either he has miscounted, been misquoted or 2 Brits have pulled out of the MD
British grass court season starts with success for Smith
Anna Smith is through to the final round of qualifying at The Surbiton Trophy after a tough three set victory over sixth seed Sarah Borwell.
The Surbiton Trophy, the first of a series of grass court tournaments in the run up to The Championships, Wimbledon, is a $50,000 men's and women's event.
Smith, who trains at the Sutton Tennis Academy, had a tough first round match against Elizabeth Thomas, needing three sets to beat the Lancastrian.
Her second match of the day was equally tough with Smith coming from a set down to defeat Borwell 3-6 7-6(3) 6-4 to set up a clash with second seed Jarmila Gajdosova.
Naomi Broady is the second player through to Sunday's final qualifying round courtesy of a 6-4 7-5 victory over Stefania Boffa.
" It's great to see Anna Smith and Naomi Broady in the last round of qualifying and we have a real chance of getting 8 girls in the main draw of a $50,000 tournament. Their wins today will, I'm sure give them plenty of confidence ahead of the wildcard play-offs for a place in Wimbledon qualifying."
Carl Maes, Head of Women's Tennis
In other matches Jocelyn Rae won her first match of the day against Georgina Bastick but was forced to withdraw from her second round match against Alexandra Stevenson with a back injury. Fellow junior Fed Cup team member Katharina Brown was also forced to retire during her second round match.
Come on Georgie, time to earn a Wimbledon Wildcard
