But can somebody please explain to me why they keep playing on non-grass surfaces at Roehampton. Why can't they just wait for the grass to dry (although I have additional question about why it's taking so long--unless its been continously raining, i dont know the weather,) and catch up later in the week like they usually do at Wimbledon?!
Because Wimbledon has good drainage and covers, whereas Surbiton (basically) doesn't.
Either that or they have to justify the cost of the new National Tennis Centre somehow - £40 m for a 2 months per year training centre for Andy Murray beating even Brad Gilbert's contract.
Come to think of it, maybe all this switching surface is part of the plan to make it tougher for the Brits - get them all injured (ref. Andy M's comments on why he missed the Argentina tie) and see how they cope at Wimby then!

There must be lots of people who have been to a Challenger, say, and would like to continue to follow some of the players they have seen there, but soon give up in the face of a virtual information blackout. I can't imagine that many persevere to the extent that the people here do, but if it was made a bit easier, who knows how many more people would maintain an interest. In the end, that would feed through to higher attendance at these events, more interest from sponsors, and so on, all to the LTA's benefit.
That's exactly the reason why this website and forum were created.....to give those people a chance to access day-to-day info on the players.......and judging by our 676 (and rapidly increasing no of members) we seem to be succeeding
So pumped about Slabba's win right now and getting 9k hits just on this thread today !!!! Will do some reports later
Can i just ask then what surface were the games played on today? Was it not outdoor hard like tomorrow? Cracking set of results anyway and a big thanks to all involved in all the updates a real pleasure to read them all.
shame for eaton, a lot of hard work this week and nothing. still i guess that goes with the territory of being a up and comming player. will he be ay queens q? might check him out
He should be at queens qualies....ranked 600ish and the cut is lowish so should make it direct.....if not he'll surely get a wc. Has really bigged-up his game in past year, grown quite a bit too, about 6,3 / 6,4.....serve-volleys on grass, not so much on other surfaces......huge serve, good volleys...returns need working on though

All matches were played on the 6 outdoor acrylic courts at surbiton.....identical surface to the aussie open.......the brit players looked so comfortable on them, having probably practised on them all year....the results reflect that !
Slabba Dabba Doo! A Brit called Alex beating Okun, whatever next! That's a seriously good result though!

It's been a brilliant day today - just the tonic required for passionate British fans. Well done to Alex, Josh and Slabba (and the girls).
Thanks to all those providing updates and insightful comments and also to those who add the touches of humour that make the site such essential reading.
Nice to come home and read that things have actually been going quite well! Well done to Slabba espesh. That was a fairly iffy draw, Okun is not a bad player by all accounts so cracking win
I just think it's a shame it's not on the grass personally  but am SORTA happy the event's coming to Nottingham now. At least I get SOMETHING next year (maybe. If I ask for the time off...)

Well, you're very welcome
Aha, it has been a good day for British tennis fans, although it does almost feel like a summer holiday, a short break that will soon be forgotten and engulfed by the normal grind once more. Lets hope that permenant emigration is on the cards though..
As the order of play for tomorrow doesnt state that it is on outdoor hard, Im tempted to say it could be on the grass tomorrow... not sure on this at all but today it was very clear that it wasnt on grass, but tomorrows order of play does say that, so could be on the grass...
Now the reports... the womens matches are going in the womens thread for those who want to read them... theyd get lost in the mass of text otherwise
Bogdanovic vs. Zverev How is Boggo ranked so low? Its just unexplainable on the strength of this performance. He served well, his groundstrokes were impressive and got plenty of returns back, and was handy at the net as well. Only downside today was getting broken at 4-2 in the 2nd and not attacking the net enough when he had the chance, but more often than not he still won the point.
Boggo cruised through the first set, breaking at 3-2 and 5-2, and Zverev didnt look up too much at all. Hes got a nice game, but has no power at all which makes him easy to play against. Boggo barely lost a point on serve and was moving Zverev around the court very nicely indeed, often taking him side to side to draw him out of court and either find an error from him or set up the winner down the line, which worked time and time again.
Boggo was also winning the slice to slice rallies as well which was good to see, and Zverev looked to have a good command of it and fits well with him game. Boggo was just better than him in all departments and its difficult to see how Zverev has managed to get so high, although he does look a nice doubles player
Boggo had to save break points at 2-2 and saved 1 with an ace, before breaking in the next game to go 4-2.... but gifted the break back with a double fault and a few errors, although a lovely backhand from Zverev got the break, leading to us thinking here we go again. Hed just started missing the lines were he was hitting beforehand, and Zverev hit a few winners, but about the only time in the match where he did so regularly.
But Boggo broke straight back and the served it out, and finished with a forehand winner to get the win to the delight of the crowd, who included Gilbert, Mike Rapheal, Peter Lungdren, and quite of few players as well who were pleased to see him win.
Very impressive today and possibly the best player on show, although Baghdatis barely looked to be trying in his match, which makes you wonder how hes outside the top 250 plays like this rest of the week and hell win the event (or at least reach the final and give Baghdatis a good test). Boggo had a big smile on him the rest of the day, so this win meant a lot to him and showed he can compete at this level looking forward to some positive press for him after this win (and we know that a lot of the media read this site so youve got no excuse not to report it...) and he looks in good form going into the grass court season.
Goodall vs. Evans we were expecting a few tie breaks with both men being huge servers, but thankfully this didnt happen as Goodall was very good and crushed Evans. Goodalls serve was huge today and I dont think Evans got anywhere near a deuce, and his forehand looked pretty massive as well.
He broke very early in set 1 and held the break easily throughout the set, and possibly could have broken again at 3-5 where he had 2 set points. He broke in the first game of the second set as well and that was it for Evans as he looked to have given up as he couldnt get anywhere near breaking serve.
Evans came out wearing sun cream on his face, but barely lasted an hour on court so very optimistic from him! And I think Brad Gilbert looked happier with this win than Boggos, almost like he expected Boggo to win but this win surprised him, although Goodall put a great performance in here.
Anderson vs. Bamford Bamfords weaknesses were exposed here quite easily as he just doesnt hit the ball hard enough to challenge the top players if hes ever going to make it at singles level than he has to find some more pace from somewhere. That said, he did quite well here despite losing 2 and 2 as he got into the Anderson serve quite a lot.
Bamford went 5-0 down in the first set and was hopeless until this point, but found a way to break back once hes got a read on the serve, and from then on threatened to break each time but just couldnt do it, having break points in 3 out of 4 games in the second set.
Bamford looked quite good when he sliced the ball in low as that seemed to trouble Anderson, so that tactic if used effectively on the grass could well be his undoing, as he has a huge serve and forehand, but struggles, as youd expect for a tall man with the low ball.
Slabinsky vs. Okun Only saw part of this match but it looked to be very close and I couldnt call a winner in it (Im writing this on the train without knowledge of the final score). Slabba has a big serve and a big forehand, but the problem for him is so does most of the top 200 so he needs something more to his game as the backhand and the return let him down a little bit.
He could have broken at 2-2 and 3-3, but Okun saved break points the first time with a big serve and then served his way out of the trouble from 0-30 next time, as did Slabba at 3-4. At 4-5 he fell 30-40 down though after a double fault and a silly error.... but DID NOT LOSE THE POINT AT SET POINT.
Slabba and Okun were in a long rally, with Slabba hitting some deep forehands which were landing on the baseline (and clearly on the baseline), when suddenly Okun walks towards the net and the umpire calls Game and first set Okun. Apparently one of the forehands was long, but it wasnt, and I dont even think he made a call of out.
Slabba was not impressed and threw his racquet to the floor before arguing with the umpire about it, telling him how wrong he was, but responded positively by breaking Okun at the start of the 2nd set and looked really pumped up to win the match as a prediction I think hell turn it around and win in 3 with Okun getting very frustrated.
Seems the prediction was right in the end and Slabba did get the win... great win for him and to recover for the horrible way he lost the first set as well shows character.
Other matches Capdeville vs. Smeets was a surprising classic with both men choking badly... Capdeville led 6-4, *5-4 and had at least 2 match points when serving for it... it could be more as the game seemed to go on forever before I went to watch it. Smeets then led *1-5 in the 3rd, but threw away both the breaks and wasted 3 match points in the process. Smeets then led 6-1* in the tiebreak, but Capdeville got it back to 6-5 and had saved 7 match points... only for put a midcourt forehand into the net to lose the match.
Smeets.... its very easy to see how he got just 1 game of Berdych last week...
Baghdatis looked very easy, although wanted to be off court a bit too quick and got broken the first time he served for the match. Never looked under any pressure and was far too good for Fischer, who played a good match for him, but Baghdatis had extra gears when he needed them.
Clement still shows signs of his quality, but the serve isnt what it was and got broken 4 times, and it was the quality of his returns that won him the match always putting Golubev under pressure, but expected an easier win than what he had.
Petzschner will be wishing for a return to the grass soon as he doesnt look at all happy on the acrylic, but his serve/volley game would work well on grass, but today was very unimpressive and could well have lost to Elgin whos got nothing in his game.
