He's trying to come back. He played Davis Cup (beat Lacko) and played in Prague with PR but a person who watched that match told me Irakli insisted on umpire to postpone the match because he didn't like the temperature (too cold) and when umpire told him to play, he retired.
Apparantly Baghdatis is looking to play in a challenger this week to get some match practice, so given that Surbiton is on grass and the other challengers are on clay, I'd expect this is the one he is more likely to show up at (or take the money at Prostejev)
Can't see the organisers turning down a WC to a top 20 player, but would mean 1 less WC for a Brit
Not entirely unexpected, and I think we'd have to say that Baghdatis is going to have a greater pull as a WC than a lower ranked british player would, but means we're down to just 3 WC's for this event now
Strange! - LTA website says - "Marcos Baghdatis, ranked No 18 in the world, has been awarded a wildcard to compete at The Surbiton Trophy which is taking place at the Surbiton Racket & Fitness Club between Saturday 31st May and Sunday 8th June (Box office: 020 8399 1594)."
Yet according to event fact sheet " SINGLES QUALIFYING SIGN IN CLOSES9PM, SATURDAY 31st MAY, ON SITE."
Anyone know the details? I tried phoning box office but no one ever answers.
Surely you don't expect the LTA to know the exact dates their own events are being held on?
A pity Baggy has got a WC anyway - 5 of the GB top 20 are defending 35 points from Surbiton between them and with this news and the strong original entry list it's beginning to look like it's going to be a very tall order for more than one or two of them to get through a round, let alone two, depending on the draw.
