It's wonderful to have another Brit with real class back on the circuit. Here's a quick R2 preview ...
L16: (Q) Jonny Marray UNR v (3) Riccardo Ghedin (ITA) WR 672 L16: Sean Thornley WR v (Q) Alex Bothe (AUS) UNR
Jonny has never played Ghedin before, but the Italian is well known on the GB Futures and Challengers circuit, with wins last year against Slabba, Ward & Eaton but losses to Childs and May. The winners of these two matches will meet in the QFs.

Unfortunately, they lost out quite tamely to the top seeds, Alcaide & Arsenov (ESP/RUS), in R2 today (2 & 1), but then, there was quite a difference in ranking (Bradshaw & Edlefsen were unranked, A & A are WR 1178)...
Good to see Jonny back and straight away he's back on the ranking board which is always good to see. Hope he continues to do well in Greece and takes a point out of all the events which would be an encouraging start to his comeback
Great to see Thornley in the QFs as well as it looks like our juniors have finally got themselves together and are all hitting form together and consistantly picking up points and making QFs as they start to move towards a higher position in the rankings
Isn't Marray able to use a protected ranking, or something?
He is, and I seem to remember calculating it as in the 320-330 range a while back (it's certainly in the 300s) but he can only use his PR a limited number of times and I assume that, like Morgan Phillips, he's decided to play qualifying in a few tournaments first to get some match practice before using his PR to get directly into Futures main draws. I'm sure that's the right way to do it - far better than using it too soon when there's a significant risk of going out in R1 and getting no points.

Yes, Jonny's PR is around 303, he can use 9 PR's over the next 6 months, could possibly make some lower level challengers with that.
As for yesterday's defeat turns out it was a shocker, he led 62 52 with two breaks - before losing 11 games out of 12 to lose!!
He said that it was very odd game, the wind is so strong it is more of an advantage to be playing 'with the wind' than serving, and he had two games into the wind at 52, lost those, then expected to hold serve at 54 to win it, but the other guy played well his level dropped and the whole game turned round.
he was obviously incredibly fed up to have a lost a game that he should have won, though I suppose the good part is that he as playing well enough to lead like that in the first place, but it's a big missed opportunity to really rack up some points. The other encouraging thing is he has had no after effects from the injury thus far, and said that the courts here are pretty slow, so if he can be getting results on a surface that doesnt really suit him then it augurs well for later on in the year.
