RE: Week 18 - Womens ITF (50K) - Gifu, Japan

Doubles SF:

DATE-KRUMM (JPN) / NARA (JPN) defeated BAI (AUS) / KRIZ (AUS) 6-4 5-7 [10-6]
SOUTH (GBR) / THYSSEN (NED) (3) defeated INOUE (JPN) / SHIMIZU (JPN) 6-1 6-0

Will Kimiko spike Mel twice?

Date-Krumm played her first proper match in 12 years and then reached a 50K final after qualifying at the age of 37???? I think I'll be less shocked than this if all sixteen wild cards at Wimbly go to Brits this year.

No wonder I hadn't heard of her before! God... you have to admire this sort of spirit. Does she plan to continue or was this something she played just for fun?

From ITF site -

$50,000 Fukuoka update
In the second of Kimiko Date-Krumm's return to the ITF Pro Circuit, interest is as high as in the previous week. On Monday some 3800 spectators turned out in force to see her in the doubles event and at least 2000 attended her singles match today.

Unfortunately for Kimiko, she was not to repeat her success of the previous week where she won the doubles title as, partnered by Misaki Doi, she lost a close match in the opening round to the number 4 seeds 67(4) 75 [10-6].

In the singles event, Kimiko is now through to the quarter final stage where, just as in Gifu last week, she will face Aiko Nakamura, who is once again named the top seed.

Tournament organisers have expressed their delight at the number of spectators turning up and hope for more of the same for the remainder of week

It seems the Japanese still love Kimiko!
