Nice start. Great to see Mel having a good year and heading towards the top 150. So encouraging.

They played each other twice in 2007 and once in 2008. The 1st Ellen won in two the 2nd and 3rd Mel won in three.

If Mel wins she will play either the number 1 seed or, more intriguingly, Kimiko Date-Krumm. Kimiko Date was the world number 4 reaching a semi-final at Wimbledon (and Australian + French Opens) in the 1990s. She is making a comeback at the age of 37, a decade after retiring!

SF

Kimiko DATE-KRUMM (JPN) Vs Melanie SOUTH (GBR) (3)

Kimiko Date-Krumm (when she was just Date) was my favourite player growing up, but since I have become a big fan of Mel over the last couple of years, I hope my childhood hero loses...

To make the semis at 37 she must still have it!

Come on Mel, beat a former top 5er! smile.gif

shame.....wonder if Kimiko will emulate Brenda McCarthy's successes in her return to the tour

Gifu has very fast astroturf courts, skiddy so suits Mel's game with the big serve and groundies
