Monte Carlo Master R2 : Andy Murray v Filippo Volandri (ITA)

So Andy makes it 1/1 on the clay in 2008...keep it up with another win please !

Volandri is 26 and is right-handed. His career high was last summer when he almost go into the top 20 but stalled at 25. Currently ranked at 42 his 2008 has not be great so far with a 8/8 W/L record including todays win over Mahut.

He beat Calleri in February but lost to Sweeting in Miami Masters R1.

His two ATP titles where won in 2004 (St Poelten) and in 2006 (Palermo).

I cannot see him getting stretched by the Italian and unless Nole has an offday it will be Murray v Djokovic in R3.

Copy of my post on the Lopez thread:

Volandri next, he defeated Mahut. Andy was trouncing him last year when the wrist injury occurred.

Let's hope for a repeat (of the trouncing, not the wrist injury!)

Oops, sorry!  Completely failed to notice this when I started my own thread on the very same topic a couple of minutes ago, perhaps because I expected to see it above the R1 thread! redface.gif  Maybe one of the mods will see fit to deleting it?

At least I can claim to be the first to report that the match will take place fourth on the centre court tomorrow, rather more quickly than I expected! shocked.gif  A genuine test of his fitness, methinks... biggrin

Since you mention fitness.....did anyone else think that the Corretja comments seemed surprising since Andy had withdrawn last week due to a virus?  As quoted in
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/tennis/article3784806.ece

"And it is not just about what you do on the court but off it, and Andy was working really hard last week in Barcelona, in the gym and on the court. He was doing track and field at 2o'clock in real heat because those are the conditions he will need to play in"

If he was fit enough to train like a champ it might have been better to pick up some relatively cheap ranking points to be sure of a seeding and a decent chance of the 4th round in this and the next masters event.

On the other hand maybe it suggests a high level of confidence in the camp that they felt he didnt need to pack his schedule - and that he was capable of picking up decent points regardless of a seeding. (If he ends up getting Nadal in the 3rd round next time that'll look foolish)

Lets hope Volandri doesnt burst that bubble of optimism.

Its all speculative but I think Andy will be business-like again tomorrow.

Maybe he was ill at the weekend and withdrew, but recovered quickly and was able to train?

Maybe he decided he didn't really want to play Valencia and thought a training week with Corretja would be better in the long term and so the virus wasn't really that bad at all (if it even existed)

Prediction for tomorrow: Volandri in 3.... Volandri's superior experience on the clay comes through in the end

No livestream for this one. I can't seem to find one at least! That's probably a good thing considering the amount of revision I need to do. I think Andy will win in two tight sets.

Another break - *5-1.  Surely that should be enough!
