RE: Week 17 - Challenger - $50k - Baton Rouge, USA

I knew I'd heard of the Battistone brothers before (I had come across a vid of thatracquet before for some reason), I just couldn't work out why. I'm a bit shocked they won using that contraption - it hasn't been a good tournament for Ken, has it! cry

As for dropshots, wouldn't it be typical if that's the one thing Andy does that the rest of the Brits have decided to copy. However, the MTF reporter suggests that, in a good way, Richard's droppers are very un-Andy-like! smile I should think the reporter was impressed at seeing a player outside the top 300 play that well - I was impressed with how Bloomers played relatively to his ranking at Wimby last year, and he was much higher-ranked back then.

Anyway, by far the most important thing today was that Bloomers won and got the points for qualifying. smile It's a huge pity that he's been drawn against Delic (a name I always assumed was pronounced De-leech until he was announced as Delick at Queen's last year), a player who was ranked 60 last July when there were better options available.

So far this year, Delic has qualified for the AO, where he beat Kendrick in R1 then only lost to Monaco 8-6 in the 5th in R2. He then won the Dallas Challenger and reached the QFs of Las Vegas ATP.

The reason Delic's ranking has dropped so much since last July (similar in % terms to Richard's drop, in fact) is that following a stellar series of Challenger performances in late 2006 (2 titles in a total of 6 Finals plus two more semis in a 4-month period), he started playing ATPs and has generally struggled there, often losing in R1 and rarely getting past R2, a plight which befalls lots of players who get into the lower reaches of the top 100 - not always quite the holy grail it may seem on the way up there. However, he was the player who stopped this year's Miami AMS winner, Davydenko, in Miami last year!

Unfortunately he still does really well at Challenger level, so Richard could hardly have got a worse draw - will his bad run of luck with draws ever end? It might well be possible to have a stab at quantifying how much of his rankings slump is due to the dire draws, but I'll leave that temptation aside for now! wink

A small chink of light is that Boggo beat Delic 2-6 6-4 5-7 in Sydney qualifying last year and went on to beat him 3 & 4 in IW qualifying too!

FQR: (q6) Richard Bloomfield WR 374 beat Luka Gregorc (CZE) WR 438 by 6-3 4-6 6-2

L32: (Q) Richard Bloomfield WR 374 v (5) Amer Delic (USA) WR 145
L32: Alex Bogdanovic WR 258 v Robert Smeets (AUS) WR 162

Edit: Gregorc got a LL place and got drawn against Hugo Armando. How unfair is that?! doh The winner of that plays the winner of Bloomers-Delic.

Well done to Bloomers for qualifying, although a tough draw for him against Delic when Gregorc got an easy draw and looks like he's going to win.

Hopefully there will be some live scoring from this event as there seems to be regular updates on MTF and good news with Boggo and Bloomers in round 2

I think there are some live game by game scores, but only from the main court, so we'll need our boys to get a bit further before we can make use of them.

he also wrote:

Alex choked serving for the first set at 6-5
Sneeds won five breaks out of six

which would maybe mean that boggo lost 1st set on a tb?

I don't know what to say. The only consolation is (and it's a very tiny one) that Brad Gilbert has probably never been rendered speechless and embarrassed so many times in so few weeks.

God, not yet again. cry.gif

I personally think Boggo should take some time off from tennis and then come back - it'll mean a big ranking drop, but the way things are going, he'll get there anyway. Sometimes a break from work can do a lot of good to you.

Given that he can't be far off getting into the situation Josh has found himself of having to play futures in order to get his ranking back to a level where he can play challengers, what are the thoughts on what he'll do? Will he accept playing futures or is it more likely he'll retire?

yeah i dont know Christian, thing is tennis is really his life, so if he quits the pro tour he will have to go into coaching and i dont know if he is ready for that yet.

i think maybe some time off might be a good idea, just to get mentally back on track. i think he should make a statement saying he is withdrawing from the DC team untill his career is on track. i still feel the arg tie really effected his year and the 3/4+ events you miss for the ties just isnt worth it at the mo. he would get a press hammering, but when doesnt he, and at least if he manages to get everything working he can be vindicated, and if he doesnt, well no one will remember him anyway.

he needs to rediscover his self belief, and he needs to pick his touraments much more carefully. he has always stuggled in hot/high humidty climates and must take this into account (i know its hard as tennsi is played where its hot). i belive he is going to go to india for at least 1 challenger (and possibly 2 if he skips the clay totaly) and again i wonder if this is wise, maybe the field will be weak and he can hope to pick up eaiser points but he has never done well in india in the past.

i still have hope he can turn it around, he has led in a lot of matches recently and choked it away so his tennis is there, but he just seems to be getting too tight at the big moments, he almost needs to play with a blank mind not thinking about rankings etc.

You're probably right about all that. You're definitely right about where Alex does and doesn't tend to do well. The dearth of GB Challengers certainly won't have helped with his scheduling this year, but you do wonder if going to the southern US is ever a good idea for him. The same applies to Bloomers, whereas players like Jamie B, Wardy, Morgan & Edward seem to flourish (relatively) in hot climates.

In the end, tennis is very confidence-based and streaky and Josh has shown recently how quickly you can make a big difference to your ranking when things start to go your way, and Alex has the game to make a difference more quickly than anyone if he can start to turn things around.

Of course, part of the problem if you're a streaky player is that you always end up with karge amounts of PTDs in a few weeks hanging over you 12 months after one of your good streaks, and with the Brits, that all too often ends up coinciding with being picked to be a (usually non-playing) member of a DC team at the critical time the following year. Has that now done for Alexx like it kind of did for Sherwood and Bloojmers before him?
