Week 16 - Futures F2 (15K+H) - Tyumen, Russia

Poor Chris, he goes all the way to western Siberia just to draw the top seed cry - nice-looking quarter for Slabba though smile ...

L32: Chris Eaton WR 682 v (1) Jan Mertl (CZE) WR 268
L32: (3) Alex Slabinsky WR 375 v Dmitri Sitak (RUS) WR 722

Mertl the Turtle has been on the slide since reaching a career high of 163 last July. He beat Boggo last year but lost to Bloomers and Colin Fleming the year before. Chris did manage to beat him in the doubles in Moscow.

Not to be confused with his higher-ranked brother Artem who ended Jamie B's winning streak in Texas, Sitak lost to Kasiri last year and is on a 7-match losing streak against Brits (3 of those losses were against Jonny Marray) stretching back to 2002. He reached a career high of 356 in 2004 but has been on the slide since and his R1 win in Moscow scored him his first ranking point since he qualified for the Donetsk Challenger last September. He did however beat Slabba in a doubles match last year.

Pretty easy field for a 15K+H. About the same as a Western European 10K. The joys of remote places...

The guys have joined forces for the doubles again this week. First match is tomorrow, and if my calculations are correct, it'll be sometime after 08.00 BST. They are second on court. teamwork.gif Opponents are Levine and Zhuravski, who didn't figure in last week's tournament.

Chris Eaton and Alexander Slabinsky beat their Russian opponents 6-4 6-2. clap.gif Some good news after a poor day in other places. handshake.gif

 Neither are on tomorrow's OoP.

At last, something to celebrate in singles this week - a huge win for Chris! (see the first post on this thread for more about why it is so impressive)

L32: Chris Eaton WR 692 beat (1) Jan Mertl (CZE) WR 266 by 7-6(4) 2-6 7-5 biggrinbiggrin
L32: (3) Alex Slabinsky WR 372 beat Dmitri Sitak (RUS) WR 724 by 7-6(4) 6-4 smile

L16: Chris Eaton WR 692 v Aleksandr Yarmola (UKR) WR 699 (age 30, CH 620 last year, beat Illingworth in Portugal, once beat Mackin but has lost to Kasiri)

L16: (3) Alex Slabinsky WR 372 v (Q) Mikhail Fufygin (RUS) WR 870 (age 17, CH 851 last year, beat Smethurst in 3 sets in Turkey recently but lost to Allinson 2 weeks in a row late last year)

Edit: changed rankings from last week's to current week's.

Yes, and a new 'big idea' for the LTA springs to mind - send all our players to Siberia! (are the salt mines still there?)

You heard it here first! wink

finally something positive for the men to build on smile.gif

Chris has really made me smile with that result, hopefully he can repeat as Rd2 but he doesn't strike me as the most consistent player.

The flag's still flying.clap.gif Both guys won their singles matches today: Eaton 7-6(5) 7-6(5), he's on a roll and Slabba 6-4 6-1. to cap it all they won the doubles, too, knocking out the 3rd seeds, Ghedin and Koniusz. winner.gif

Next up for Eaton is Kirillov (5) and for Slabba - Koniusz (8).
In the doubles SF it will be Arsenov wink and Donskoy, a team who are also unseeded.

Go guys, may the force be with you, cos I am for one. floating.gif

Brilliant smile.gif - since this is a 15K+h, that's 4 points each, twice as many as Chris got in the whole of the first three months!

QF: Chris Eaton WR 692 v (5) Evgeny Kirillov (RUS) WR 377 (CH 286)

QF: (3) Alex Slabinsky WR 372 v (8) Blazej Koniusz (POL) WR 489 (at CH)

Chris is the only unseeded player in the QFs. Kirillov has only ever played 3 Brits - he beat Morgan Phillips in qyalifying for a Future in Qatar 3 years ago, lost to Jim May in Sweden 2 years ago but - and this suggests that he will probably have too much for Chris - he thrashed Slabba 1 & 2 in Lille last month.

Koniusz's only previous matches against Brits were a convincing win over Daniel Jewitt and a straight sets loss to Jamie Baker in GB Futures last year.

Slabba second match sometime after 05.00 BST *eek*

Chris, not before 07.30 BST.

The doubles, not before 11.00 BST. It's gonna be another busy, nay, tiring day for the two young bucks. date.gif

clap.gif I love it when someone backs up a great win with a second win, well done Chris biggrin.gif

Also nice to see Alex winning again, hopefully he can go all the way this week. Where are the Brits seeded to meet? Semis or final?
