Rice didn't make it losing out to the 16th seed. Rice, Ward and Seator all figure in the doubles. They all play their first round doubles matches tomorrow, Ward and Seator being in opposition.
And in the doubles Ward and Ittogi got the better of Pellerin and Seator 4-6 7-6 (2) [10-2]. Rice and his partner also won 6-1 7-6 (3).
Sadly, Ward & Ittogi couldn't keep it up against López Parra & Sánchez Navas, but they went down fighting: 1-6 7-6(5) [5-10]! In the top half of the draw, however, Ricey & partner strolled through against the conquerors of the top seeds, Penades Sanz & Rexach Itoiz, 2 & 1 & then proceeded to stroll on into the final courtesy of another of those mysterious walkovers against Alonso Campos & Hernández Aguila! In that final they will player LP/SN or the Italian third seeds, Capone & Grassi, who had as much of a struggle as their opponents to reach the SF, eventually overcoming Lejnieks & Sieber (LAT/GER) 7-6(4) 2-6 [10-4]! Ricey & Gutierrez should be much the fresher of the pairs on (I presume) Friday!
Of all tyrannies a tyranny exercised for the good of its victim may be the most oppressive.... those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience
Lynne means that they will be sneaky and underhand, as opposed to gentlemanning them (surely there's somebody out there old enough to twig the reference ... )
