Conor Niland plays in the main draw of the Carson Challenger in California (the state where Niland studied), US. He has drawn eighth seed Ryan Sweeting.
This Challenger is played at the Home Depot Center. In case the name doesn't ring a bell, it's the stadium of LA Galaxy (and CD Chivas).
Ugh... Niland retired when he was 6-1 and 5-5 up. Whatever happened can't have been great if he retired when he was leading nicely.
Taylor Dent, who used to be one of my favourite players once, made his long awaited comeback out here. He lost to Cecil Mamiit in three sets but I'm glad that he's again playing competitively.
i wonder what happened, real shame as he was very close to knocking out a good player and earning some decent points and who knows what he could have won in the tourny.
Niland was defaulted not retired. He accidentally hit a linesman in frustration - a la Tiger Tim - after missing out on match point at 5-4. No way back after that - instant DQ.
Apparently though he is now going to practise with Pete Sampras at his home in Beverly Hills. C'mon Ireland!
Looks a very good chance to make the QF, I would say Conor needs to make use of these main draws he is getting into before his points start to fade and he has to enter futures again, if he can consistently get match practice at challengers it willonly help him in the longer scheme of things. Thanks also greenleaf for helping with this thread, espically with exams at the moment its very hard to get moments to search for results etc but is it me or are very few irish players if any playing futures this week or last week? Shame after a few new faces were adding to the ranking list in the last few weeks.
No, no other Irish male player is in any main draw this week from what I can see. And I agree that most players haven't played much recently - O'Brien and Tristan FM have skipped two weeks in a row and McGahon hasn't played for almost four weeks now.
Looks like Niland defends a lot in Dublin, so I'll be happy if he ends the year inside 250. Louk hasn't got much to defend, though, so he should push for the top 200.
The Challenger in Dublin, played in the second week of Wimbledon, has been upgraded to a 75K+H this year (from the 50K it was last year), which means that the winner will get an impressive 70 points. It's possible that one or two top 100 players will go there, which can only raise the profile of Irish tennis.
