1338 USA LINGMAN, Dave [13] v GBR ARLIDGE, Burnham UNR
Still Burnham should give him a game...u ever seen him play Dan ?
I didn't see him play at Exmouth but he was in the players lounge on the Friday for a while, talking with the few of us that were in there (Tassart, the Crazy Pole, the Stringer, me, Rob Knight and Jack Findel-Hawkins (who's a hell of a player for a 13/14 year old - was too young to play ITF events though or else he'd have been in qualifying, and I'd have expected him to have won a few games at least))
He's originally an Aussie but moved to the UK a few years ago - would hope he'd win this match but wouldn't have him as the favourite
Thanks again Dan.
So he would rather play for GB....good for him.
So he is 20 this month and was born in Melbourne...now residing in Basingstoke.
He had a WR high of 1071 in 2006.
Talking of 2006, was trawling the Net earlier hoping to find a bit more background info & stumbled across this, from the Bradford Telegraph & Argus:
Veteran clinches tour title
by Bill Marshall
Having slogged his way around the world, including such unlikely places as India, Thailand and Uzbekistan, Gary Henderson was ranked the fifth best tennis player in Britain in 1994. He was world-ranked No 237 and the following year played in the men's singles at Wimbledon against Guy Forget and got a career-high doubles ranking of 323 that November. However, it was not easy to make a living at the Challenger level he had just broken into and financial hardship forced the Bingley-based player to quit the full-time circuit. Coaching jobs followed at Ilkley, Heaton, Hallamshire and, since September, Ilkley again. But the 36-year-old reminded his adoring Ilkley public just what they have been missing on Saturday when he won the men's singles at the Tropicana British Tour event. He beat defending champion Burnham Arlidge from Basingstoke 6-2 6-1 in just 53 minutes.
Henderson, who survived a marathon 3hr 15min second-round match on Thursday against second seed Matt Taylor, said he had even thought about entering the $15,000 Men's Futures Tournament which ran alongside the British Tour event at Ilkley. "That would have meant driving up from County Week at Eastbourne last Saturday night," he revealed. "But I have been practising with Ross Connolly recently and I am confident I would have qualified, just as he did." Whether Henderson's British Tour victory, against players who were often almost half his age, says more about the 36-year-old than the current state of the British Tour is a matter for debate.
But Henderson's mixture of heavy serving and reliability of his groundstrokes, particularly his sliced backhand, certainly proved a potent mixture against Arlidge. And before the end, 18-year-old Arlidge almost became embarrassed by his inability to deal with whatever Henderson threw at him. Ilkley Lawn Tennis and Squash Club's performance coach, who last won Ilkley's British Tour title in 1994, said: "I used to enjoy competing after I came off the circuit, but then I had a three or four-year period when I didn't want to compete. But now I have my hunger again and I will be playing in the Yorkshire Championships at South Leeds Stadium when I come back off my holiday."
* Wasn't there some discussion of an ageing British pro (forget the name) unexpectedly popping up for a tournament somewhere last summer?
Edited because I forgot to include the date: 9:51am Monday, 7th August 2006
I nearly choked on my Twirl when I saw that you had quoted my article on Burnham Arlidge. To be honest, the article was more about Gary Henderson but Arlidge struck me as a decent bloke. Sadly, covering Ilkley is my only involvement with tennis these days, apart from keeping an eye on the exploits of Katie O'Brien, Anna Fitzpatrick and Naomi Broady, who are all former pupils at Woodhouse Grove School on the Bradford-Leeds border; plus Ross Connolly and Kyle Brassington, who are both from Ilkley. Hope to see many of you at the Ilkley tournament. It's very scenic with Ilkley Moor as a backdrop and the River Wharfe nearby but, as do all grass court tournaments, it is so reliant on decent weather. Keep up the good work with this web-site - and it's nice to be reading it at 6pm and not at 1am or 2am after a long shift!!

Welcome to the community William !
So what excites you about British tennis these days ?
Cheers, Mike. Nice to know I wasn't imagining things! I could say I was just too damn' lazy to go back into last year's threads, but in mitigation, I would also plead there's a limit to the amount of time I can spend on such activities in my lunch break!

Blimey! I certainly seem to have started a bit of a hare with that earlier post, which was never my intention! I was simply trying to added to the common "knowledge base"! Hope it wasn't anything more serious than a near-choke on a Twirl, Bill (William?)/Blades Forever, & that you've now fully recovered from the shock of seeing your article regurgitated on here. I realised that Gary H was the intended focus of the article, but I couldn't see any way of excising the comments on his showing that day without making the the whole thing more or less meaningless & background info on so many of the up & coming (one hopes!) lesser lights in the Brit tennis firmament is often so hard to come by that I chose to ignore it! I also deliberately omitted the second half of the article because this is the British men's forum & it dealt with Anna F's exploits in the (if memory serves!) parallel women's Futures event, at which she actually triumphed!
P.S. Do you happen to know if Gary is still trying his hand at competitive tennis?
Main draw out and both our boys got poor draws. James plays 4th seed Ryler de Heart and Miles got 3rd seed van der Merwe. We'll do well to get any points out of this outing.
Wardy scrapes into doubles draw to try and make at least some money this week. Playing with Aussie youngster Greg Jones.
They may yet stand a chance in the first round at least, as they've drawn the unranked US WCs, Kevin King & Anderson Reed...
Easy peasy: 3 & 2! They face Adam El Mihdawy & Richard Ruckelshausen (US/AUT) in the QFs later today (14.00 local time - can't remember whether that's 19.00 or 20.00 BST! ). Their opponents saw off the fourth seeds, Sunil-Kumar Sipaeya & Amir Weintraub, quite easily, 3 & 2, yesterday & are more highly ranked (1745 vs 2138), so are not to be underestimated! Wardy also has his singles match against de Heart to play at 10.00 local, so has a busy day in prospect!

I do believe it will be 20.00 BST. That's if I've done my sums correctly. A good win for Jones and Ward, let's hope they can keep it going and that James has succeeded in his singles, *fingers crossed* (need a smilie) and Miles, too, of course.
