RE: Week 14 - Futures F13 (10k) - Loja, Spain

I wonder when he will start using his protected ranking?

That's an interesting question. I'm not surprised he hasn't used it yet, since he needs to be in a position where he's likely to win a main draw match before it's worth it - obviously he has now done that, but he got about as good a R1 draw as he could have hoped for this week.

The other problem here is that because a PR doesn't affect seedings, he needs to find a main draw that his PR would be high enough to get him direct entry into - there's no point using it for a qualifying draw that he could have got into anyway when a PR doesn't affect seeding.

His PR will be about 590 (depending on exactly how the ATP count the weeks in the first three months of his injury) - that would easily have got him into Exmouth this week, but because he tends to play in Spain where the Futures draws tend to have a bit more strength in depth, it would have been touch and go whether it got him a DA into Loja this week and it wouldn't even been close to getting him into the 15K in Malaga next week.

I think we'll probably see him using it to get into some of the Spanish 10Ks in the not too distant future.

Edit: Morgan's PR would easily get him into the week 16 Future in Melilla because it's on hard courts so most of the Spaniards have given it a miss. He hasn't entered it using his PR though, but hopefully there will be other opportunities like that to use it in Spain or maybe Italy (another country he used to play in quite frequently) before too long.

I think the lack of Spaniards going to Melilla is more to do with it being in Morocco - it's a bit like GB F15 being held in Gibraltar.

Glad to see Morgan back winning matches!  Go Morgan! biggrin

Ah, I see, it's like Ceuta (i.e. on the Moroccan coast but technically Spanish) - I wonder why they hold a Future there, it'd be like us holding one in Gibraltar. Talking of which, odd that they moan about Gibraltar when they have similar territories in Morocco.

[Morgan's] next opponent has not been decided yet, but will probably be no. 1 seed Pere Riba-Madrid (ESP) WR 264.

It has now - & it is:  he beat Agustín Boje 4 & 2.  The match will be the first on Court 3 tomorrow, starting at 10.30 BST.

*  Sadly, Ricey wasn't able to keep his run going in the doubles:  he & Bagnis lost 2 & 1! cry

We can only hope that Riba-Madrid is knackered after winning 9 matches in a row, but in the unlikely event that Morgan wins this or goes close, we'll know that he's back with a vengeance! Riba-Madrid has reached the Final of the last six Futures he has played in (in between attempts at Challenger and ATP qualifying), winning three of them, including last week's when for some reason he went through qualifying too.

I forgot to mention that in winning last week's Future, Riba-Madrid brought Rui Machado's 26-match winning streak to an end. Quite frightening then!

Is there still no news from the singles side of things? It seems to be taking rather a long time for information to get through...cry.gif

Having said that, I've only been following futures level tennis for a couple of years and the information-flow has definiely gotten quicker in that short time so I guess I could probably suffer a few more days without too much hastle. biggrin.gifwink.gif

No, I've tried the ITF, STP, TE and TS sites, but nothing yet. Rest assured that when the result does come through, two of us will post it within seconds of each other then someone else will post it again tomorrow evening. smile.gif

lol, I love the multiple posting of results, everyone has their own style of presentation so you're never reading two identical posts and you get a bit more information with each one. It's great biggrin.gif

That's true, everyone does it slightly differently. smile.gif

Anyway, I have bad news, though perhaps not unexpected given Riba-Madrid's recent form:

L16: Morgan Phillips UNR lost to (1) Pere Riba-Madrid (ESP) WR 264 by 0 & 2 cry

So, still quite a long way to go for Morgan before he gets back to his old form, but he's certainly taken a first big step this week by minimising the time he spends off the ranking list. smile

Meanwhile, Rui Machado (7) marches on on the back of a 6-3 0-6 6-2 victory over Federico Cavallero of Argentino! disbelief.gif

Well donw to Morgan for getting back on the ranking lists quickly and hopefully can be the start of a comeback for him.

I guess he's waiting until he finds some form and feels he's in a position to win a few matches in main draws before using the PR - presumably he wants to feeling he's going to pick up a point in each of the 9 weeks when he uses it as well
