Super Bally and now she must have a great chance to win S/F. Impressive stuff. Such a shame she can't play more weeks at a time. When she's on song you really do think that she should be in the top 100. A real gutsy player.

WTA World says that Bally lost 6-0 6-1 since her opponent was a Lucky Loser it suggests that Bally may have been below par for the match.

There is now another report that says that Elena Baltacha won 6-3 6-4 which seems much more likely to be true.

Yeah according to a belgian site Bally won

Benesova is a good player so theres no pressure on Bally, shes the underdog. Lets hope on her current form though she can pull off the win.

It is true - see item on a Belgian website below. She plays Iveta Benesova in the final, who is a former top 50 player on an equally good run of 9 straight wins.

My Flemish is not great, but I think it says that Thyssen got an early break, immediately answered by Bally followed by another at the end of the set - and she got an early break in set 2 and held. Bally is the first Brit to reach a 75K final in the 12 years I have followed British tennis. Congratulations and good luck in the final!

Baltacha en Benesova naar finale Torhout In de eerste halve finale van de Koddaert Ladies Open in Torhout heeft Elena Baltacha gewonnen van Nicole Thyssen. In de finale krijgt ze gezelschap van Iveta Benesova die zich plaatste ten koste van Sandra Kloesel.

De eerste halve finale ging aanvankelijk gelijk op. Thyssen ging dan wel door de opslag van Baltacha, maar de Britse antwoorde met een tegen-break. Naar het einde toe was het echter Baltacha die door de service van Thyssen ging. Ze serveerde daarna vlot de set uit. Ook in set twee kon de Britse al snel een break voorsprong uitbouwen en deze gaf ze verder niet meer af.

Here's the Flemish news story. A rough precis translation of this (there are bits I don't understand, but perhaps Goldfish can supply a more detailed translation) is:

Bally got an early break but lost the first set in the tiebreak. In the second Benesova had no answer to Bally's powerful strokes and Bally got the decisive break at 4-4 in the final set.

Baltacha eindwinnares in Torhout De Britse Elena Baltacha heeft in Torhout de tweede editie van de Koddaert Ladies Open op haar naam geschreven. Ze versloeg daarvoor in de finale Iveta Benesova in drie sets.

Iveta Benesova (WTA-126), het vierde reekshoofd, was al van bij het begin van de wedstrijd op achtervolgen aangewezen. Baltacha (WTA-164) nam namelijk al snel een break voorsprong. Toch moest de Engelse deze een tijdje later opnieuw inleveren en in de slotfase van de set was het dan een tiebreak die de beslissing moest brengen. Daarin bleek Baltacha opnieuw de betere.

De opflakkering bij de Tsjechische was echter maar van korte duur, want in de tweede set werd ze door Baltacha van het kastje naar de muur gestuurd. Benesova had geen antwoord op de krachtige slagen van de Britse en ging zelf ook meer fouten maken. Baltacha won dan ook zeer vlot de tweede set.

In de derde en beslissende set ging ze door op haar elan. Ze nam meteen een voorsprong en leek die met een aantal sterke opslagspelletjes niet zomaar in te leveren. Toch kwam Benesova voor tot 4-4, maar de Tsjechische slaagde er niet in te bevestigen op eigen opslag. Baltacha brak opnieuw en faalde niet om de wedstrijd uit te serveren.

Bally's success means we have 3 Brits in the top 150 for the first time since June 1998, when the 3 musketeers were Sam Smith, Karen Cross and Lorna Woodroffe (the latter 2 dropping out because they had big points to defend from Wimbledon 1997)
