Personal view on Josh this week is that he got a rotten draw.
I can't imagine Josh would have picked Kasiri to play against (nor would Kasiri have picked Josh). Most other players in the draw I think Josh would have beaten.
Brit Draws:
Brits were drawn against the 1, 2, 3 and 6 seeds in Jersey: Evans and Thornley had to play someone with at least half their ranking.
Realistically only Illingworth and Slabinsky stood a chance of going through (Slabinsky only by virtue of the fact that he was seeded - with Britluck he would have had to play a seed himself if he hadn' been).
I hate to blame results on draws, but in this case I think it's entirely justified.
Saying all that though, Kasiri has to do all us Brit fans a favour tomorrow and win after he did for our Josh in Round One!!!!
Malteaser - yes, the draw was rubbish - in all, the next six Brits in the rankings after the two who were seeded managed to draw five of the top six seeds between them, so while getting just three players through to R2 of a home 10K is awful, in some ways it's a relief that one of the outside-top-1000 players stepped up to join Slabba and Miles-or-Josh in surviving R1.
As you suggest, the really annoying thing will be if Miles now goes and loses to someone that Josh would almost certainly have beaten, if not we'll let him off.
JL - It's ok, what you say is fair enough, I was just trying to lighten the mood a bit (not very successfully, admittedly)
What's always amazed me about this board is that despite the mix of ages (or perhaps partly because of that?) and the strong opinions many of us have, there's never been any really nasty sniping here like there is on virtually every board on the Net (except perhaps on AM.com, where they sometimes seem to love each other just a little too much ) and I'd like it to stay that way.
I know that's really the point you were trying to make in the first place, so this is all going round in circles a bit. (i.e. my turn to shut up now)

Forgot to mention, that WOULD have made sure of a top 500 place for Miles at the end of Miami had he just lost (i.e. not defaulted) against Ball.
As it is, a R2 win may be enough (53 may be enough for Seator too) but he's likely to have to win a rematch against Ball in the QFs to make sure of it.

That default is going to bug us all until we can find out what it was about isn't it!
I'm a little disappointed in the results today, but I'm a firm believer in not expecting wins to go against rankings. Which makes me more happy for Kasiri, though also more disappointed about Goodall. This week, and I emphasise the 'this week' however, Josh has come from winning the previous week's tournament and it's not the first time a player has subsequently lost rd1. Look at Andy Murray for one if you don't believe me!
Well done to Slabba, he's probably our main hope this week now. Nice to see Illingworth get another point as well, I saw him at a futures last year and as Sheddie has said, he just gets everything back, and chases a lot of balls down.
Shame the Skupster couldn't progress, but he had a tough draw so can't be too upset about that.
Any news of what's happening in the doubles? We can usually rely on a Brit win there at a British futures
As for the slight nastiness going on, I think it's important for everyone to remember that when writing on a messageboard it is impossible to see expression and know tone of voice, and much of our humour/sarcasm/teasing requires both those things to be understood. As people have said, this is one of the nicest messageboards out there and I would hate to see that change. If we could all tone down the grammer policing, I think that would diffuse much of the problem. If it bugs you, sorry but please grin and bear it, as otherwise it's easy for some people to take offense whether it was intended or not. Thank you everyone. Lecture over.

The doubles are fairly thin on the ground for entries this week. Bamfs and Goody had a bye, Skupski and Grambow beat Evans and Flan 6-7(8) 7-5 [10-5] and Feaver and Hewitt dipped out to Danilovic and Pedersen.
Not to labour a point but I feel I need to make a "Josh" comment re his win last week. Yes, he won the final, but to be honest reaching the final from that field, I would have expected nothing less. Only he, Bloomers and Ball had rankings in the 300's. Everyone else was 500+. Also, if our players are to improve both their game and their rankings, they have to beat players higher ranked than themselves and they have to start sometime.

No better than the singles, but more according to ranking: Grambow & Skupski (WR 747 according to the draw sheet) beat Evans & Flanagan (WR 1312) 6-7(8) 7-5 [10-5] - a good fight by the underdogs - & Danilovic & Pedersen (WR 844) beat Feaver & Hewitt (UNR) by 4 & 3. That means our only representatives in the QFs are the fourth seeds, Bamfs & Goody (WR 607), who had a bye in R1, & Goody & Skups! Fortunately, they're in opposite halves of the draw...

Wow, Josh can't be doing that badly if he's still in both halves of the doubles draw!
(* hangs head* sorry, couldn't resist )

No problem, steven! It's been a while since I made such a spectacular booboo, so I probably deserved that: I was so busy correcting a spelling mistake in another part of my post that I completely missed that one! It should, of course, have been Grambow & Skupski...
I know, that's how many of my more spectacular gaffes come about too - i.e. thinking about soemthing else at the same time - not just when I'm writing, when I'm talking too.

Oger conceded a walk over today and Nielsen was forced to retire. Shame they couldn't have done that against the Brits yesterday but it does mean that the first and third seeds are no longer in the tournament.
I gather from comments by johnnylad in the thread on last week's tournament in Bath that he would like posters on this MB to get off Josh Goodall's back. When he loses to a player ranked 100+ places below him, as he did to Miles Kasiri today (6-7(4) 6-4 4-6), why the hell should we? At least Slabba had a good win (4 & 4) & will play Matt Illingworth in R2 ( ), which means one guaranteed Brit in the QFs. There will be a second, if Miles (WR 519, according to the draw sheet) can see off Rasmus Norby (WR 656), which he should, but since when have Brit tennis players lived up to their rankings in this kind of "hand-to-hand fighting"?!!!
I think the annoying thing about Mr Goodall is that he is a damn good player, certainly one of Britains best, his form is no doubt frustrating him as well as us!
In the doubles Grambow and Skupski benefited from Oger's withdrawal and will play Bubka and Olejniczak (UKR/POL) in one semi.
Bamfs and Goody after a monumental struggle won through 4-6 7-6(6) [10-1] to play Kunnap and Martin (EST/SVK), who had themselves benefited from the retirement of Nielsen in the singles, to take the final semi-final place.
For the sake of completeness, since few others seem to bother about the doubles, Grambow & Skups, unsurprisingly, since Oger withdrew from the singles & handed a walkover to his compatriot, had a walkover against Oger & Tourte in the top half of the draw & play the third seeds, Bubka & Olejniczak (UKR/POL), in the SFs, while Bamfs & Goody beat Eichenberger & Gojowczyk (SUI/GER) with a struggle, 4-6 7-6(6) [10-1], & play Kunnap & Martin (EST/SVK) in the other SF after the latter had another unsurprising walkover against the Danish second seeds, Nielsen & Norby. So a more balanced position there from the Brit point of view...
