Illingworth winning brings a halt to an 8-match losing streak since Jersey qualifying finished:

- Boggo bogtastic chokefest in Miami
- Baker's breadstick in Leon
- Seator's stuffing in Antalya
- Skupster, Hewitt, Feaver, Evo & Flan getting beaten here

So well done to Matthew (our first points-scorer this week) and to Flan for getting to close against on-form Gojowczyk ranked over 500 places higher, though of course Flan himself might not be ranked in the 900s if he really put his mind to it.

Apart from Muzza in Miami (not due to play for days yet), the only other five Brits left are:

Josh & Miles playing each other here
Slabba hoping to get through to face Matthew here
Bammy playing no. 1 seed Oger here
Rice playing in Spain

From the Canary Islands to Thailand to the Med, I always mischievously imagine a connection between Brits, holiday destinations and first round exits! Although surely nobody in their right mind would give up a ranking point for a rainy night on the tiles in St Helier?

Bammy lost a seemingly crazy match 2-6 7-6(3) 6-0 to no. 1 seed Oger. After a fabulous start, it looks like he kept the 2nd close and then did a Boggo-super-duper-special meltdown after failing to win it in two. ashamed Either that or Oger had finished waking up. doh

Miles beat Josh ... I had an inkling that Josh's run might end here.

I gather from comments by johnnylad in the thread on last week's tournament in Bath that he would like posters on this MB to get off Josh Goodall's back.  When he loses to a player ranked 100+ places below him, as he did to Miles Kasiri today (6-7(4) 6-4 4-6), why the hell should we? confuse.gif  At least Slabba had a good win (4 & 4) & will play Matt Illingworth in R2 ( cry ), which means one guaranteed Brit in the QFs.  There will be a second, if Miles (WR 519, according to the draw sheet) can see off Rasmus Norby (WR 656), which he should, but since when have Brit tennis players lived up to their rankings in this kind of "hand-to-hand fighting"?!!! hmm

Well done to Slabba. He might be higher ranked than Chramosta but Chramosta has won a GB Futures thid year so was probably the most dangerous of unseeded floaters!

Miles beating Josh is a real positive and negative. At least Josh won last week and it was close.

1 guaranteed and odds on two in the QF's.

Possilbe Ball vs Kasiri rematch in QF's. Maybe Ball will default this time wink.gif *Gets ahead of himself*

Well spotted! Wonder if Fitzy could find out what happened in 'Round 1' of that bout wink (though I guess he's no longer there)

(my last post crossed with your little dig so.....)

Gather what you like Lynne but to be honest you and DJ have turned a previously fun messageboard into a "pick on peoples grammar fest" and a place to slag new posters off if they happen to like computer games, and despite a call to "celebrate British successes" it seems we are to blame Josh for losing a close match to another up and coming young Brit the week after he's won a title having finally got out of Portugal (which I admit was bad scheduling) rather than celebrate Miles winning as we would if his higher ranked opponent has been Croation, Italian, Australian etc....

I wish you'd "gather" stuff elsewhere to be quite frank.

mad.gif at you!

R2 preview

This is the 4th year in a row that Slabba has met Illingworth in a UK event, and he has a 3-0 record to defend:

2005 Great Britain F7 Futures 64 Grass (O)  A.SLABINSKY 6-1 6-0
2006 Shrewsbury Challenger 32 Hard (I)  A.SLABINSKY 6-3 1-6 6-3
2007 Great Britain F12 Futures 16 Grass (O)  A.SLABINSKY 6-2 6-2

Miles has never played Norby in singles (1-1 in doubles), but Norby's results v Brits in the last 12 months have been (earliest first):

32 W  Chris PRIDDLE (GBR)  6-4 6-2
SF L  Alexander SLABINSKY (GBR)  3-6 6-3 6-7(3)
32 W  Tom RUSHBY (GBR)  6-3 6-1
16 L  Jamie BAKER (GBR)  3-6 0-6
16 L  Joshua GOODALL (GBR)  4-6 4-6
32 L  Alexander SLABINSKY (GBR)  7-6(3) 4-6 1-6
32 W  Joshua MILLER (GBR)  6-2 4-6 6-4
16 L  Edward ALLINSON (GBR)  6-4 6-7(1) 2-2 RET

Norby only lost out to Ball 10-8 n the 3rd set t/b last week.

RE: Week 13 - Futures F5 (10k) - Jersey, Great Britain

Uh-oh, let's not turn into MTF (i.e. having a go at each other and it not being just in fun) - none of these are black and white issues so maybe we should just agree to disagree. For example (he says, tentatively stepping in between the two boxers LOL) ...

Grammar - I'm with you on the grammar/English thing in general, Stircrazy, but we're all posting here just for fun, often in a hurry, so I think people can be forgiven some mistakes. However, feel free to have a go at my grammar/spelling mistakes to your heart's content, I won't get offended. smile

It would be nice to have reasonably error-free stuff posted on the more public-facing home page, of course, but I think that's been improving too. (I admit to not looking there that much, but that doesn't mean I don't think it's a great way to attract new people in! smile)

As for DJ, JL, I'm pretty sure he really does do virtually all the grammar stuff in fun (or to those he knows won't take offence), though given what it says about him in his profile, he could be forgiven for taking it a tiny bit seriously through force of habit. wink

Computer games - I have to admit I had a chuckle at the stircrazy/DJ response on the tennis game thread, hopefully that was meant in fun too. Just think of us as the old farties of the board, as Ben Elton used to call himself. wink (sorry, speaking only for myself here, and even I'm not the 'old' bit LOL)

Josh - the jury's out on this one too, I think. He annoys me because he seems to stop himself from fulfilling his potential, yet as you know, I found myself making excuses for him in Portugal (despite generally being no. 2 seed, he was getting dire draws against Machado and the like) and he did win 7 matches to take the title in Bath, which is pretty good going. Perhaps it's not surprising that Miles outlasted him in a close match today.

At least, none of the three of us have come up a with the theory that Josh's lack of mental toughness problem might stem from the fact that having gone to a comprehensive, he may not have been b*ggered often enough as a child, as a certain person who shall remain nameless did (out loud, in between points) last year. (terrible, I know, and I don't condone the theory one little bit, but remembering the story still cracks me up! smile)

It might be fun here or there but when its little bits of fun everywhere its NO fun, and its NO fun when aimed at new posters without the sense to add in a caveat about your positions as "Ben Elton's" of the board.

Pick on my grammar/spelling too! Its generally ok but dodgy when i'm in a hurry. I just think the "fun" might offend people more than you think. A dripping tap can get very annoying.

Anyways, last I shall say on the matter coz I'm in danger of dripping to much myself!

In a word, no! (that's something one is only allowed to call oneself)
