L32: Tom Rushby WR 697 v (WC) Bernard Tomic (AUS) WR 1214

Tomic managed to win AO juniors this year aged just 15 and is ranked 3 in juniors at the moment. His only previous experience at senior level has been a WC into AO qualifying, where he stunned Yeu-Tzuoo Wang WR 153, coming back from a set down to win 4-6 7-6(13) 7-5 before losing 3 & 2 to Prakash Amritraj WR 271.

Those two results send out contradictory messages, but given Rushby's current form, I wouldn't be too hopeful about this one!

Much closer than I thought he would too. What a pity he didn't manage to sneak that 2nd set.

That's a good effort against Tomic considering his recent form - Tomic will be top 100 within a couple of years so he did well to take him that close

At least he & his Aussie partner, Raphael Durek, the top seeds, survived the first round of the doubles.  Almost wll-to-wall Aussies in the top half of the draw  (surprise, surprise! biggrin ):  they beat Andrew Thomas & Mark Verryth 4 & 2 in that first round & play two more, Isaac & Leon Frost, in the QFs! smile

Rushby & Durek march into the SFs after beating the Frost boys 3 & 5! clap.gif  Their opponents there will be two rare non-Aussies, the all-Japanese pairing of Yaoki Ishii & Yuichi Ito, who had a battle to overcome the pair that had a walkover against the fourth seeds (Lindahl & Matosevic), Joel Lindner & Lance Vodicka (AUS/USA), 4-6 7-6(1) [10-4].

And into the final they go with a 2 & 5 victory & the chance to play the Aussie second seeds, Armstrong & Ebden, for the title! thumbsup.gifsmile

Unfortunately, they fell at the final hurdle, so to speak:  they were thrashed 2 & 1! cry
