Continuing the 'excuses for Josh' theme (not sure why, but never mind!), the player who beat him this week (Burrieza-Lopez) today became only the second player to take a set off Rui Machado during the Portuguese player's now 22-match winning streak.
So taking the other 'excuses' from the last couple of weeks into account, either Josh has been terribly unlucky to draw unseeded players just as they were coming into great form or you can look at it as a bunch of changes for big points thrown away, in the sense that if he'd got past the matches he's lost in Portugal, he might well have reached a Final or two.
Hmm, sorry, Steven, not sure I buy all that rigmarole...! Much as I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt - yet again - Josh has been on the slide for a wee bit too long now & I can't see him ever reversing the trend!
I was trying to make the case for both sides of the argument there, not just defending Josh. However, taking the title in Bath suggests that all is not lost for him yet.
Anyway, what I actually came back to this thread to say was that under ATP rule VII. 4. m. iii. 1, by getting defaulted in his QF, Miles lost the two points he gained for reaching the QFs in the first place. The phrase "wot a plonker" comes to mind ... (obviously we don't know the circumstances though, maybe the officials just got carried away)
What an unmitigated disaster this trip to the Algarve was for all concerned ...
