QF: Richard Bloomfield WR 353 v (3) Matthias Bachinger (GER) WR 186
Both players have career highs in the 170s and Bloomers has met Bachinger once before, at the Rimouski Challenger in 2006 when Richard was the no. 4 seed and Bachinger was ranked much lower - Richard suffered a shock 7-6(5) 7-6(5) loss that day and Bachinger reached the semis, going out to Pless.
Bachinger did not reach another Challenger semi until Louisville last Oct/Nov, but once he got there, he beat Kendrick then Isner then Donald Young (despite being bagelled in the 1st set!) to win the title. This week is only the second time he has won two matches in a row since then though.

For what it's worth, I agree with your interpretation of the Japanese scoreboard, Steven. On the OoP, the symbol for the country of the first person in match 3 on court C matches the symbol for the second player on court B, match 3 (Brands), and also for the first-named player of the second-named pair in the doubles for C5 (Kindlmann, again). The symbols match the scoreboard, with the German losing in just the way you said - 25 minutes before me!!

Also for what it's worth, the score is confirmed on Richard's site!
Didn't know Richard had a site! Ah, well, you live and learn - except me, by the looks of it. Thanks, guys, I'll try to do simpler, if not better, tomorrow.

As are the Japenese characters that spell Richard Bloomfield.
Not on my computer at work, they're not (haven't tried checking at home yet) - something to do with needing the appropriate language pack, which our firewall keeps out if I try to download it!
DJ: see here for Richard's site, then go to "Latest news".

I neither speak nor read Japanese, but I do know a little bit about the "mechanics" of the language. The characters to which you refer are (I presume, since I can't actually see them! ) what are known as katakana, the angular characters used primarily in the transliteration of foreign names & words imported from other languages into Japanese (though I understand they now also serve quite a useful purpose in advertising, surprise, surprise...!), so not part of what might be described as the orthodox language.

Sorry you cant see the text -I guess you (and many others) dont have Kanji fonts enabled so I have replaced the text with a .gif, only problem is then you cant copy and do a search.
Richard Bloomfield in Japanese = (At a quick glance 'Richard' looks similar to ijfp-F )
Friday's QF match against Bachinger is around 4.00am GMT.
To put the disappointing doubles loss with Ken into perspective winning opponents (LL) Im and Kwon are now thro to the semis after beating Mertl and Vacek, who had beaten the No 1 seeds, so they are no 'walkover'
