I can get to the home page fine via http://www.freewebs.com/britishtennis but if I put in http://www.britishtennis.net I get some green generic home page which is nothing to do with us.
Turns out the tech support person can't help unless the problem is that you've done something stupid. It didn't help that they thought they could access thesite fine, not realising that the filler page wasn't the actual home page.
[11:03:25 AM] : Hello, how are you doing today? [11:05:14 AM] Steven: Hi. If I try to get to our home page http://www.britishtennis.net/, I get a generic search page instead of the home page even though if I go via www.freewebs.com/britishtennis it works. Other people are reporting the same problem. [11:05:35 AM] Constantine: To set your Primary Web Address: [11:05:42 AM] Constantine: Step 1. Login to your account. Step 2. Click on the Site Settings Tab on top. Step 3. Choose to set the Primary Web Address. [11:06:24 AM] Steven: That's all been done - it's been working fine for a long time, it's just stopped working today [11:06:28 AM] Constantine: What browser are you running? [11:07:01 AM] Steven: Internet Explorer [11:07:39 AM] Constantine: have you tried a different browser [11:08:50 AM] Steven: just tried with Safari - same problem [11:10:19 AM] Constantine: may I have a direct URL to your site? [11:11:02 AM] Steven: http://www.britishtennis.net is the domain name [11:11:28 AM] Steven: http://www.freewebs.com/britishtennis is the original freewebs address which does still work [11:11:19 AM] Constantine: thanks. one moment please [11:12:00 AM] Constantine: I can see the http://www.britishtennis.net site perfectly. [11:12:11 AM] Constantine: When is the last time you cleared your cache? [11:12:54 AM] Steven: I haven't done it for a while [11:13:22 AM] Steven: I can try that now too, though as I say lots of other people are reporting problems too, so it seems unlikely that would be it [11:13:18 AM] Constantine: If you would like to clear your cache using Safari, please follow these steps. [11:13:23 AM] Constantine: 1. Open up the Safari Web browser. [11:13:28 AM] Constantine: 2. Click on the heading 'Safari' and choose 'Empty Cache' from the pull down menu. It will then ask you if you really want to delete the cache. [11:13:33 AM] Constantine: 3. Click on 'Empty' if you are ready to clear Safari's memory cache. [11:13:38 AM] Constantine: 4. Close and reopen the Safari Web browser. [11:14:54 AM] Steven: ok, I've emptied the cache and closed and reopened safari - still the same problem [11:16:17 AM] Constantine: Unfortunately, since there is HTML on the site. That is as far as I can give support. But I can make a ticket for this on your behalf and send it to the senior techs to resolve the issue. [11:17:13 AM] Steven: I'm sure it must be something much simpler than anything to do with the html though - are you not getting other reports of the same problem this morning? [11:17:24 AM] Constantine: No we're not...and I can see your site perfectly. [11:17:39 AM] Constantine: Lots of green and a tennis player to the right. [11:19:29 AM] Steven: ah - that's not the home page [11:19:52 AM] Steven: that's a generic page that seems to come up when the site can't be accessed [11:20:20 AM] Steven: if you go to http://www.freewebs.com/britishtennis you'll see the actual home page [11:20:42 AM] Constantine: oh wow. yes, much nicer. [11:21:43 AM] Constantine: I have sent the ticket in and you should get an email regarding this soon. [11:22:02 AM] Steven: ok, thanks
Sheddie, if you're around, an you let me know if they write to the Boggo email address the site is registered under and, just a thought, is it possible that the domain name itself isn't registered to freeserve and that the domain name has expired even though the Freewebs subscription hasn't?
Edit: a 'whois' search on bt.net gives:
Domain Name: BRITISHTENNIS.NET Registrar: WILD WEST DOMAINS, INC. Whois Server: whois.wildwestdomains.com Referral URL: http://www.wildwestdomains.com Name Server: NS1.PARKED.COM Name Server: NS2.PARKED.COM Status: clientDeleteProhibited Status: clientRenewProhibited Status: clientTransferProhibited Status: clientUpdateProhibited Updated Date: 16-mar-2010 Creation Date: 02-feb-2007 Expiration Date: 02-feb-2011
Wild West Domains are a domain name reseller, so I don't know if they are who you got the domain through. Expiration 02-feb-2011 suggests that everything is ok, but "Updated Date: 16-mar-2010" looks a bit suspicious given that late on that date US time would coincide with when the problems started.

I go straight here and I'm using IE. Same address on my iphone which uses Safari, and a friend of mine was on this morning and he uses Firefox.
Thanks. Bizarrely, those are the two browsers I've tried and that URL doesn't work for me from either. I wonder what the problem is, it's even harder to identify if it's working for some people and not others.

further to my above post, shedie would have bought the domain through freewebs, but then somehow that a lended up as WWD, so you have to swap it back to freewebs. neediny some authorisation code to do so. i think you'll probably have to renew freewebs hosting at the same time.

Thanks Count, all sounds a bit unnecessarily messy, but it's something Sheddie would have to deal with, I think. I've emailed him, so let's see what happens.

Bit of a long shot but any chance Sheddie is watching at Bath today, seeing as he said he would be there most days on the entries thread? Maybe SMC can spot him there if you're going again today?
Unfortunately I'm not there today (might be tomorrow though). However, I did see someone of that description - turned out to be Matt Illingworth though.
:( I'm not surprised the chat people couldn't help you steven. Remember when I was having issues with my freewebs site and you suggested that I ask the support people on chat? Yeah, they were about as useful as that guy was for you. They just didn't seem to understand what the problem was that I was having! They kept telling me how to fix completely different problems which had nothing to do with my problem!

hi guys just caught up with this....unfortunately the email address I had on there was not the one I regularly use now so haven't got any info freewebs/webs may have sent on it.
If you need to contact me use: dcwriter89@googlemail.com
I've had a look and doesn't appear to be obvious what I need to do....sounds like Count Zero is the man with the info about this.
How do you switch from wwd (whatever that is ?) back to freewebs ?
log into your freewebs account, under premium services go to mnage domains, there you should find all the info on how to transfer, you will need to get an auhtorisation code from WWD,
hmm i've just checked and all of the help links on the transfer page are down. hopefully thats temporary. you will have to log into your wwd account (should be the same as the original freewebs registreation) and request the code. maybe the online webs support can help.
i never had a problem like this though. did the site ownership expire? the whois details are listing some guy/compnay in the states as owner, unless they are part of freewebs? when i check my site it lists me.
