Malisse and Mirnyi are the main candidates for overseas WC's, and I think they'd both them to be honest. Malisse got one at Queen's which is usually an indicator and probably will get another one, while Mirnyi's partnership with Jamie means he's got to be in with a good chance of getting one, especially as if he had to qualify it would mess up Jamie's attempt to defend his Nottingham title.
The other 6 are still up for grabs, but it looks like Boggo and Baker have them if they want them by being in the top 250, while Goodall will probably get one as well after his Queen's WC.
That leaves 3 WC's, which should go to Bloomers (outside chance of winning a match) and Slabinksy (british number 5, good results over the last year and big ranking rise)
Leaving just the 1 WC, which could either go to a junior eg. Ignatik, a recovering Taylor Dent as a long shot, or another Brit.
If it goes to a Brit, then Skupski has to the favourite with him having the best chance to win a match in the event which his game, plus his commitments to Liverpool meaning he couldn't play qualies (although if he does choose Liverpool over Nottingham qualies and Wimbledon qualies then I won't be the slightest bit impressed by that)
For Skupski to miss Nottingham qualies, he'll have to reach the semifinals in Liverpool.
That's not impossible as four other players in there are a 15 year old, a Norwegian who's there just because of his nationality, a qualifier and an Acasuso who's probably playing his first grass match in three years. Ken can beat all of them, I'm sure!
Isn't it hypocritical that journos and fans alike who complain that Boggo et al get wild cards and waste them every year say nothing about people like Kuerten? I mean... that man has got 15 wild cards in the last few years and has got only two wins - against Volandri and Salamanca (Career high of 272).
Okay, okay... the best clay player of the last two decades after Nadal, one of the nicest and most liked people on the Tour, etc. etc. but surely that doesn't give someone the right to live off them for so long??? He'd probably lose to even the worst player in the draw. I respect his talent but I'm honestly glad that he has retired and won't be eating up wild cards that could go to deserving people.
true but given Guga said it was his farewell season I don't think they could really refuse him wildcards at several of those tournaments.....events like Miami (I don't know if he ever won the title but he had that phenomenal final against Sampras a few years back) and Roland Garros were virtually 2nd homes.
If he hadn't been retiring this year of course then I would agree 100%
but it would have been like Wimbledon refusing Greg a wildcard last summer....ok he probably wouldn't win a match but there would have been no way they could have turned him down
Yeah, maybe the last WC was fairer than many we see, but it had honestly become a joke. No matter how good you are (even if you're Fed or Borg), a single player getting 15 WCs and winning one proper match is sad, really.
Still, today's farewell ceremony was great. Good luck to the great man in the future.
"The LTA makes its recommendations to the All England Club and had set a world ranking cut-off of No 250 to guarantee the opportunity of a place in the main draw. The names of Jamie Baker, who is recovering well from a blood condition, Alex Bogdanovic and Josh Goodall have been put forward by the governing body."
An interesting read from Neil Harman today, and offers details of background to Josh that I'm sure many of us didn't know. However it is the paragraph that reads.....
"The LTA advised the All England Club to limit the number they handed out," Draper said in 2006, on the eve of his first Wimbledon in charge of the sport. "We feel additional lucky loser wild cards (to those who lost in the since abandoned play-offs that year) do not help in creating a winning culture in British tennis. Good luck to all British players at Wimbledon - but in future years the LTA will work closely with the All England Club to establish a water-tight system that rewards winners and potential future winners."
.....that caught my eye most. It was the quotes I was refering to when I first started this thread. Many have stated on here who THEY think should get wld cards, my concern was who will THE LTA think worthy. Its possible more than half will be given abroad. We should know by Wednesday.
I think Boggo should get it as there's no one else to give it to (although that's his only claim). He'll be back soon, I'm sure - he probably needs some time away from all this.
i hate to say it but after reflection i dont think theres anyone elsee for it. I heard Ian flanagan was going to do the wc playoffs this year on the bbc.
