Other competitors of note in this Futures tournament.
Berankis, Ignatik for the young lads.
Verkerk for the older lads.
Wolmarans and Okun for the Brit beaters.
Looks a tougher entry than last week!
Come on Jamie!
Verkerk beat the sixth seed, Victor Estrella, 3-6 7-6(4) 4-0 retired yesterday, while Wolmarans must must have pulled out before play got under way, as his place in the draw has been taken by a LL, Siarhei Betau (BLR), who took full advantage of that luck by seeing off the American WC, Adam El Mihdawy, 6-4 3-6 6-3! So, two seeds out of the way before the Jamie B show even gets on the road!
I think maybe Jamie would have preferred the Dominican Republic's finest to stay in the draw rather than Verkerk, who was once ranked 14 but was out injured for nearly 2 years after unjuring himself the week after he had won Amersfoort ATP.
Having said that, poor Verkerk played 12 matches last year, losing the lot Admittedly, many of them were ATPs which he got into using with WCs or his PR, but he didn't do any better in a couple of Challengers then a Future either.
In fact, today's win (his first match since last September) snapped a 15-match losing streak in main draws since he came back. I'm amazed that at around 30 years old, he's even bothering to play Futures to try to climb back up after what happened last year - he must either believe he still has it in him to get to the top 100 again or just love playing.

actually verkerk really believes he can get back into the top 100. he called us about giving him a wc into our tourney this year. he was a finalist here in 02, but we decided to go with the future of tennis(berankis) for our wc. btw, berankis was a super kid and i wish him all the best.

Thinks for the inside info on Verkerk, TBar, and the result. It must have looked a bit dodgy after that 1st set, t/b lost 7-2. I wonder if he faced any MPs in the 2nd.
Still, there was bound to be a bit of a reaction after last week's win and at least he made it through in the end.
L16: (1) Jamie Baker WR 269 v (LL) Hyung-Kwon Kim (KOR) WR 1246
Looks like another match Jamie should win easily, but to sound a small note of caution, Kim was WR 481 in July 2006. However, his last match against a Brit was a loss to Jonathan Kinsella in September last year, so I doubt Jamie will be approaching this match with too much trepidation.
All the seeds in the bottom half of the draw lost in R1 (including no. 2 seed Noam Okun), so it'll be interesting to see who emerges from that half of the draw, whether it be Verkerk, Berankis or someone else.

Yeah, as Brit luck would have it, the two remaining seeds besides Jamie himself are in his half: Pavel Chekhov (RUS/4) & Alberto Francis (US/8), Ryler de Heart (5) having lost 6-7(3) 3-6 yesterday to the Belorussian qualifier, Uladzimir Ignatik...!

Ignatik is a former junior number 1 though so definately has some talent (as does Chekhov but he's very inconsistant)
Jamie's match should be finished by now I think. Any news Craig or anyone else?
